Abstract

Cost and time are critical factors in construction projects. Therefore, it is essential to determine the optimal cost and time by performing Crashing on activities within the critical path. The analysis begins by identifying the critical path using the Critical Path Method (CPM), followed by crashing the activities on the critical path. In this study, acceleration is achieved through three alternatives: adding 2 hours of overtime (alternative 1), increasing the workforce (alternative 2), and adding a night shift (alternative 3). The determination of the optimal cost and time is based on two key variablel cost and time utilizing Euclidean, analysis to identify the most efficient trade-off between the two.. The analysis reveals that the most optimal alternative is alternative 2 (increasing the workforce). The project's normal completion time is 210 calendar days with a cost of IDR 4,483,505,000 By applying Crashing, the project completion time is reduced to 148 calendar days, resulting in a time saving of 62 calendar days. However, this acceleration increases the cost to IDR 4,583,211,000 an additional IDR 99,705,000 Thus, alternative 2 is considered optimal compared to alternatives 1 and 3 in terms of cost and time.

Review

This study tackles a highly relevant and practical challenge in construction project management: the optimal trade-off between project duration and cost. By applying the well-established Critical Path Method (CPM) and Time Cost Trade-Off (TCTO) analysis, the authors investigate how project acceleration can be achieved and its financial implications. The clear focus on a specific local case study – the Islamic Center Building in Jambi Province – provides valuable context and grounds the research in real-world application, making its findings directly applicable to similar projects in the region. The abstract effectively highlights the problem, the methodology employed, and the key outcome, demonstrating a structured approach to a common project management dilemma. While the study offers useful insights, the abstract points to several areas that could benefit from further elaboration and methodological rigor in the full paper. The claim of using "Euclidean analysis to identify the most efficient trade-off" requires more detailed explanation, as the precise application of Euclidean distance in determining optimal cost-time efficiency might not be immediately intuitive without a clear definition of the multi-dimensional space and trade-off criteria. Furthermore, the selection of only three acceleration alternatives, while practical, could be discussed in terms of its exhaustiveness; exploring other strategies or combinations might yield different optimal outcomes. It would also be beneficial to delve deeper into the cost components (e.g., direct vs. indirect costs, penalties) that contribute to the IDR 99,705,000 increase, and to discuss potential risks or non-financial impacts associated with the chosen acceleration method, such as impacts on quality, safety, or resource availability. Overall, this paper provides a valuable contribution to the understanding of time-cost optimization in construction projects, particularly within the Indonesian context. Its findings, specifically that increasing the workforce is the most optimal acceleration strategy for the studied project, offer practical guidance for project managers and contractors facing similar challenges. The research serves as a good example of applying established project management techniques to derive tangible benefits. Future research could expand upon this work by incorporating more sophisticated multi-criteria decision-making frameworks to evaluate trade-offs, considering a broader range of qualitative factors, and performing sensitivity analyses on various cost parameters to enhance the robustness of the findings.
