Abstract

Review

This paper, titled "Strategi Komunikasi Edukatif dalam Memberdayakan Siswa Marginal: Program Pengabdian Masyarakat Dosen Universitas Gunadarma di Sekolah Terbuka Depok," investigates a highly relevant and critical area: the application of educational communication strategies within community engagement initiatives to empower marginalized students. The study is grounded in a specific Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat (PKM) program by Universitas Gunadarma, targeting socio-economically disadvantaged students at Sekolah Terbuka Yayasan Bina Insan Mandiri. The research effectively focuses on the nuanced interpersonal and participatory communication approaches adopted by lecturers in their roles as mentors, trainers, and counselors, thereby providing practical insights into pedagogical strategies tailored for vulnerable populations. Utilizing a qualitative case study methodology, the researchers employed document analysis, interviews, and reflective observation—methods well-suited for exploring the intricate dynamics of human interaction in an educational context. The findings are compelling, indicating that educational communication built on empathy, message personalization, and two-way interaction significantly fosters trust, enhances learning motivation, and promotes positive attitudinal shifts among the students. This strongly supports the paper's central argument that communication is not merely a tool for information transfer but a strategic mechanism for achieving social empowerment through education. The study's recommendation for integrating these specific educational communication strategies into community-based educational program designs offers valuable and actionable implications for practitioners. Overall, this research offers a significant contribution to the field of community-based education and communication studies, particularly concerning marginalized youth. While the abstract effectively highlights the positive impacts of the strategies employed, a deeper exploration in the full paper into the specific challenges encountered during the program's implementation, and how these communication strategies specifically navigated or mitigated them, would further enhance its practical utility. Future research could also benefit from examining the long-term effects and scalability of these approaches. Nevertheless, the study provides robust evidence for the transformative potential of well-designed and empathetically delivered educational communication, laying a strong foundation for future initiatives aimed at fostering educational equity and social inclusion.
