Abstract

ABSTRACT Elderly people in Kawengan Village face a high risk of hypertension, yet awareness regarding its prevention and management remains low. A situation analysis shows that most elderly people do not understand the risk factors for hypertension, do not undergo regular blood pressure checks, and receive minimal direct health education. The activity partners, namely the village, community health center, and health cadres, face obstacles in reaching the elderly systematically due to limited resources and access to information. The objective of this activity is to increase elderly awareness and understanding of hypertension through an integrated educational approach. The benefits of this activity are expected to encourage healthy lifestyles and improve early detection of hypertension among the elderly. Implementation methods include coordination with partners, outreach through lectures and interactive discussions, distribution of leaflets, and blood pressure checks by the community health center team and health cadres. The results of the activity showed an increase in elderly understanding of hypertension, indicated by a 42% increase in post-test scores compared to the pre-test. In addition, 85% of participants stated their readiness to have their blood pressure checked regularly and to begin adopting a healthy lifestyle. The conclusion of this activity shows that integrated socialization involving universities, community health centers, and health cadres is effective in increasing elderly awareness of hypertension and strengthening cross-sector collaboration in promotive and preventive efforts.

Review

This paper presents a valuable initiative aimed at addressing the critical issue of low hypertension awareness among the elderly population in Desa Kawengan. The problem statement is clear, highlighting the lack of understanding regarding risk factors, irregular blood pressure checks, and limited direct health education. The chosen approach, an integrated socialization program involving a university, local community health center (Puskesmas), and health cadres, is commendable. This multi-sectoral collaboration not only leverages diverse expertise but also strengthens community engagement and the sustainability of health promotion efforts, making it highly relevant for public health interventions in similar rural settings. The methodology employed appears appropriate for a community service activity, commencing with a situation analysis to tailor the intervention effectively. The implementation included a combination of educational strategies such as lectures, interactive discussions, and the distribution of informative leaflets, complemented by direct blood pressure checks. The reported results indicate immediate positive outcomes, showing a significant increase in the elderly's understanding of hypertension and a high percentage of participants expressing readiness to adopt healthier lifestyles and commit to regular blood pressure monitoring. These findings underscore the short-term effectiveness of the integrated educational approach in enhancing health literacy and encouraging preventative behaviors. While the intervention demonstrates clear immediate benefits, some aspects warrant further clarification for enhanced academic rigor. Firstly, there is a notable inconsistency in the quantitative results provided in the abstract, with differing percentages for both the pre-post test increase (91.43% vs 42%) and participant readiness (95% vs 85%). Clarifying these figures is crucial for the credibility and precise interpretation of the findings. Additionally, while the increase in awareness and readiness is promising, the abstract does not specify the number of participants involved, which would provide better context to the reported percentages. Future reports could also explore the long-term impact on actual behavioral change and clinical outcomes, although this often extends beyond the scope of initial community service activities. Nevertheless, this project offers a robust model for collaborative health promotion, effectively bridging academic knowledge with community health needs.
