The term "petrichor" was coined in 1964 by Australian scientists Isabel Joy Bear and Richard G. Thomas. It derives from the Greek words "petra" (stone) and "ichor" (the ethereal fluid said to flow in the veins of gods). They discovered that this characteristic scent comes from a combination of plant oils accumulated on dry surfaces – like rocks and soil – and a compound called geosmin. Geosmin is a metabolic byproduct produced by soil-dwelling bacteria, particularly _Streptomyces_. When raindrops strike the dry ground, they flatten, trapping tiny air bubbles. These bubbles then shoot upwards, aerosolizing the trapped plant oils and geosmin into the air, allowing us to inhale this signature aroma.

But petrichor isn't the only player in the rain's olfactory orchestra. Before a thunderstorm, you might notice a sharp, clean scent often described as "electric" or "fresh." This is ozone (O3), a molecule formed when lightning bolts split oxygen (O2) and nitrogen (N2) molecules in the atmosphere. These freed atoms then recombine to form ozone, which is carried down to ground level by downdrafts, signaling the approaching storm. Furthermore, rain has a profound cleansing effect, washing dust, pollen, and pollutants from the air. This purification, combined with the release of negative ions, contributes to a general sense of clarity and crispness that we often associate with post-rain air.
