Abstract

Review

This paper addresses a highly pertinent topic in contemporary development studies: the strengthening of the Pentahelix model in sustainable tourism planning, using Desa Wisata Pakualam as a compelling case study. It appropriately frames the development of tourism villages in Indonesia as a crucial strategy for regional income generation and local socio-economic upliftment, emphasizing the integrated aspects of economic, social, and environmental sustainability. The identified challenges—including coordination gaps, stakeholder commitment issues, community readiness, and infrastructure limitations—set a clear and relevant problem statement that the proposed Pentahelix synergy aims to resolve. The research objective is clearly stated: to identify how the Pentahelix components are being strengthened in this specific context. The methodology employed, a qualitative descriptive analysis, is suitable for the stated objective of describing events through words and images, rather than relying on numerical data, thus allowing for a nuanced exploration of the roles played by various stakeholders. The findings effectively delineate the specific contributions of each helix: academics drive knowledge and innovation, businesses provide economic impetus and social responsibility, the community acts as the primary mobilizer of local potential, the government orchestrates policy and coordination, and the media facilitates promotion and branding. These results offer valuable insights into the operationalization of the Pentahelix model within the context of rural tourism development, providing a snapshot of the current state of collaboration in Desa Wisata Pakualam. While the paper successfully identifies the distinct roles of each Pentahelix component, it would benefit from further elaborating on the *interplay* and *synergies* among these actors, beyond simply listing their individual contributions. Future research could delve deeper into the effectiveness and impact of these roles on actual sustainable tourism outcomes, perhaps through a more in-depth analysis of specific initiatives or a comparative study with other villages. Additionally, exploring potential barriers to optimal Pentahelix integration and offering actionable recommendations for policy or practice would enhance the paper's practical utility. Nonetheless, this study provides a foundational understanding of stakeholder engagement in sustainable rural tourism, contributing to the discourse on local development in Indonesia.
