Abstract

Abstract: This study aims to develop audiovisual-based learning media for writing observational report texts using the inquiry method for eighth-grade students of SMPN 1 Wita Ponda and to test its validity, practicality, and effectiveness. The study used a research and development method with stages of needs analysis, design, development, validation, trial, and product revision. The research subjects included material experts, media experts, Indonesian language teachers, and eighth-grade students. The research instruments were validation sheets, practicality questionnaires, and pretest and posttest writing skills tests. Data were analyzed using quantitative descriptive analysis techniques, N-gain calculations, and paired t-tests. The results showed that the developed learning media were in the very valid and very practical categories. The effectiveness test showed a significant increase in students' writing skills with a moderate N-gain value and significant t-test results. Thus, audiovisual-based learning media with the inquiry method is feasible and effective for use in learning to write observational report texts in junior high schools. Keyword: Learning Media Development, Writing Report Texts, Inquiry Method Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan mengembangkan media pembelajaran menulis teks laporan hasil observasi berbasis audiovisual menggunakan metode inkuiri pada siswa kelas VIII SMPN 1 Wita Ponda serta menguji tingkat validitas, kepraktisan, dan efektivitasnya. Penelitian menggunakan metode penelitian dan pengembangan (Research and Development) dengan tahapan analisis kebutuhan, perancangan, pengembangan, validasi, uji coba, dan revisi produk. Subjek penelitian meliputi ahli materi, ahli media, guru bahasa Indonesia, dan siswa kelas VIII. Instrumen penelitian berupa lembar validasi, angket kepraktisan, serta tes pretest dan posttest keterampilan menulis. Data dianalisis menggunakan teknik analisis deskriptif kuantitatif, perhitungan N-gain, dan uji t berpasangan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa media pembelajaran yang dikembangkan berada pada kategori sangat valid dan sangat praktis. Uji efektivitas menunjukkan peningkatan signifikan keterampilan menulis siswa dengan nilai N-gain kategori sedang dan hasil uji t yang signifikan. Dengan demikian, media pembelajaran berbasis audiovisual dengan metode inkuiri layak dan efektif digunakan dalam pembelajaran menulis teks laporan hasil observasi di SMP. This study presents a commendable effort in developing and evaluating an audiovisual-based learning medium specifically designed to enhance junior high school students' ability to write observational report texts using an inquiry method. The paper addresses a pertinent challenge in language education, where complex writing skills often require engaging and structured pedagogical tools. The chosen combination of audiovisual elements, known for their ability to capture student attention, with the inquiry method, which fosters critical thinking and active learning, is theoretically sound and holds significant promise for improving student engagement and learning outcomes in this specific writing genre. The research employed a rigorous Research and Development (R&D) methodology, which is highly appropriate for designing and testing educational interventions. The stages outlined, from needs analysis to product revision, demonstrate a systematic and thorough approach. The inclusion of diverse subjects, including material experts, media experts, Indonesian language teachers, and the target eighth-grade students, ensures comprehensive validation and feedback. The use of multiple data collection instruments—validation sheets, practicality questionnaires, and pre/post-tests—along with robust analytical techniques such as quantitative descriptive analysis, N-gain calculations, and paired t-tests, further strengthens the credibility of the findings regarding the media's validity, practicality, and effectiveness. The results strongly support the utility of the developed media, indicating it is "very valid" and "very practical," which are crucial prerequisites for successful classroom implementation. More importantly, the effectiveness test demonstrated a significant increase in students' writing skills, evidenced by a moderate N-gain value and significant t-test results. This finding is a key strength, providing empirical evidence that the integrated audiovisual and inquiry-based approach is indeed effective in improving students' capacity to write observational reports. Consequently, the study offers a valuable contribution to educational technology and Indonesian language pedagogy, recommending a feasible and effective tool for fostering essential writing skills in junior high school settings.
