Abstract

The Merdeka Curriculum’s Pancasila Student Profile Project (P5) seeks to integrate 21st-century competencies (collaboration, problem-solving, and digital literacy) within Indonesia’s pluralistic values. This study develops P5 teaching materials (a teacher’s companion book and a student module) that integrate ethnoscience by using Jambi’s kerupuk panggang production as a cultural context for heat and temperature. Using the ADDIE model, we conducted the development phase and produced a digital flipbook version via AnyFlip, then evaluated feasibility with qualitative and quantitative evidence from expert validators, teachers, and students. Expert reviews yielded mean feasibility scores of 81% for the companion book and 82% for the module (very good category). At the needs and perception stage, 42% of students reported understanding of local wisdom and its linkage to science concepts, and 63.3% indicated good motivation when learning was connected to P5. Teacher and student responses characterized the materials as practical and engaging for P5 activities. These findings support the feasibility and practicality of the materials for subsequent classroom implementation studies; effectiveness on learning outcomes was not tested in this phase.

Review

This study presents a timely and relevant endeavor to develop Ethnoscience-Integrated P5 teaching materials, effectively bridging local cultural heritage with scientific concepts within the framework of Indonesia's Merdeka Curriculum. The integration of the "kerupuk panggang" production process as a contextual learning tool for heat and temperature concepts is a commendable approach to ethnoscience education, aligning with the P5 project's aim to foster 21st-century competencies and pluralistic values. The utilization of AnyFlip to create digital flipbooks for these materials further enhances accessibility and supports digital literacy, making the pedagogical resources modern and engaging for contemporary classrooms. The developmental process, employing the ADDIE model, demonstrates a structured approach to creating these innovative teaching materials. The initial evaluation phase focused on feasibility and practicality yielded very positive results. Expert validators rated the companion book and student module as "very good" (81% and 82% mean feasibility scores respectively), indicating strong content and pedagogical soundness. Student feedback further underscored the materials' potential, with a significant percentage reporting improved understanding of local wisdom's link to science and increased motivation when learning was connected to P5. These findings provide robust evidence for the initial quality and potential engagement capacity of the developed resources. While the study successfully establishes the feasibility and practicality of the teaching materials, it appropriately notes that the effectiveness on learning outcomes was not tested in this phase. This clear limitation points to crucial avenues for future research. Subsequent studies should focus on implementing these materials in actual classroom settings to rigorously assess their impact on student learning achievement, conceptual understanding, and the development of P5 competencies. Nevertheless, this work serves as an excellent foundational study, offering a promising model for integrating ethnoscience and digital tools into the national curriculum, thereby enriching the educational experience by connecting students with their cultural context.
