Abstract

Review

This paper presents a focused archaeological study on four protomaiolica ceramic artifacts discovered during the 1990-91 excavations within the church of San Domenico in Cagliari. The abstract clearly outlines an approach that begins with a detailed characterization of these artifacts based on their stylistic and formal attributes. This initial descriptive phase is critical for establishing a solid foundation for further analysis, setting the stage for a comprehensive examination of these significant finds from a well-defined archaeological context. A key strength indicated by the abstract is the paper's intention to precisely determine the origin areas of these protomaiolica pieces through rigorous comparative analysis with published materials. Such an approach is vital for tracing trade networks and cultural interactions in the Mediterranean during the period. The abstract emphasizes the "exceptional" nature of this discovery at San Domenico, suggesting that these finds are not merely isolated artifacts but offer substantial new data. This promises to provide fresh perspectives on the patterns of protomaiolica importation into Sardinia, a topic of considerable interest for understanding the island's economic and cultural ties. Ultimately, the research aims to offer general considerations regarding the role of this specific ceramic class within Sardinia, a broader discussion that is significantly enriched by the presented material. The contribution of this paper lies in moving beyond mere description to engage with wider archaeological questions concerning insular connectivity and material culture diffusion. While the abstract outlines a compelling scope, the full paper's impact will hinge on the depth of its comparative analysis and the robustness of its concluding arguments on the broader implications for Sardinian archaeology. This work appears to be a valuable addition to the study of medieval Mediterranean ceramics and trade.
