Abstract

Review

This article promises a compelling and historically significant investigation into the 1924 visit of the Regia Nave Italia to Cartagena de Indias, offering a crucial Latin American counter-narrative to existing historiography largely dominated by Italian sources. The research's primary strength lies in its commitment to unearthing unpublished archival material, providing readers with "información inédita" that promises to enrich our understanding of this unique "feria navegante." By reconstructing events from both historical and anthropological perspectives, the author positions the study to shed light not only on the immediate experiences of Colombians with the floating fair but also on broader themes of cultural exchange, diplomatic outreach, and local reception during a period of burgeoning Italian influence in the region under Mussolini and D'Annunzio. The article's intent to contribute to the historiography of traveling fairs and the adaptation of ships for such purposes further underscores its potential impact. The proposed methodology is particularly robust, combining rigorous historical source analysis with anthropological fieldwork, a synergistic approach well-suited to exploring the complex interplay of "expectativas y realidades" hinted at in the title. The explicit adoption of Actor-Network Theory (TAR) for tracing "agencies" is a significant theoretical choice that could provide a nuanced understanding of the manifold human and non-human actors involved in the event. TAR's capacity to illuminate networks of influence, power, and material transformations makes it an ideal framework for analyzing an event as multifaceted as a traveling fair, where intentions, objects, people, and environments all contribute to the unfolding narrative. This theoretical lens, applied to a previously under-examined Latin American context, offers a fresh perspective on historical events and their broader socio-cultural implications. Overall, this exploratory article outlines a timely and original contribution to scholarship. The promise of new archival material, an interdisciplinary approach, and a sophisticated theoretical framework suggests a high-quality investigation. A successful execution will be contingent on the clarity with which the "rastreo de agencias" is performed and how effectively the "Expectativas y realidades" are delineated, distinguishing between the Italian government's promotional aims and the lived experiences and interpretations of the Colombian populace. The findings could offer valuable insights not only into specific historical events but also into the mechanisms of cultural diplomacy, colonial encounters, and the reception of foreign spectacle in early 20th-century Latin America. This manuscript holds significant promise for publication.
