Abstract

The low level of students’ mathematical literacy, particularly in linking mathematical concepts to daily life, remains a challenge in education. This study develops an interactive Student Worksheet that incorporates Malay maritime culture to enhance seventh-grade students’ mathematical literacy through differentiated learning. Cultural elements such as the traditional game porok and the fish trap bubu are included, since both represent proportional concepts relevant in mathematics. Differentiation is based on diagnostic tests of students’ literacy levels and applied to process and content aspects, adjusted to their readiness. The research follows the ADDIE development model through analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation phases. Practicality testing involved one mathematics teacher and 30 students from Class VII.E at SMP Negeri 17 Bintan, while effectiveness testing used the same participants. Data were collected using interviews, validation and practicality questionnaires, and literacy tests adapted from the 2022 PISA framework, focusing on reasoning and problem-solving. The findings show the worksheets is highly valid (88.14%) and practical, with positive responses from the teacher (93%) and students (88.40%). An N-Gain score of 0.75 (high category) confirms effectiveness. These results indicate that the developed worksheets successfully improve students’ mathematical literacy through differentiated learning and the integration of Malay maritime culture.

Review

This study presents a timely and relevant approach to address the persistent challenge of low mathematical literacy among students, particularly their difficulty in connecting mathematical concepts to everyday life. The core innovation lies in the development of culturally integrated interactive worksheets, specifically tailored to the maritime Malay context for seventh-grade students. By incorporating familiar cultural elements like the traditional game porok and the fish trap bubu, which inherently embody proportional concepts, the research seeks to make mathematics more relatable and engaging. Furthermore, the integration of differentiated learning, adjusted to students' readiness based on diagnostic tests, adds a crucial layer of personalized instruction to enhance the effectiveness of the intervention. The research adopted a robust ADDIE development model, progressing through analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation phases. Practicality and effectiveness were rigorously tested with one mathematics teacher and 30 students from SMP Negeri 17 Bintan. Data collection utilized a comprehensive set of instruments including interviews, validation and practicality questionnaires, and literacy tests adapted from the 2022 PISA framework, specifically targeting reasoning and problem-solving skills. The findings are compelling, demonstrating high validity (88.14%) and practicality, evidenced by strong positive responses from both the teacher (93%) and students (88.40%). Crucially, an N-Gain score of 0.75, categorized as high, confirms the significant effectiveness of the developed worksheets in improving students' mathematical literacy. Overall, this study offers a highly promising model for enhancing mathematical literacy through culturally responsive pedagogy and differentiated instruction. The successful integration of Malay maritime culture provides a strong contextual anchor, making abstract mathematical concepts tangible and relevant for students. The robust developmental methodology and the strong empirical evidence of validity, practicality, and effectiveness suggest that these interactive worksheets are a valuable educational tool. This research not only contributes significantly to the field of mathematics education but also provides a replicable framework for integrating local cultural heritage into educational materials, potentially inspiring similar initiatives in diverse cultural contexts to foster deeper student engagement and understanding.
