Abstract

Review

The article "Propriedades morfossemânticas do duplo diminutivo no português" presents a timely and detailed investigation into a fascinating aspect of Portuguese morphology: the double diminutive. The study addresses the crucial question of whether the second diminutive suffix (DIM2) in forms like *chuvinhazinha* serves merely as an intensifier of the first diminutive (DIM1) or if it introduces novel semantic values. By tackling this nuanced area of morphosemantics, the paper promises to significantly enhance our understanding of how iterative affixation operates in Portuguese, moving beyond simplistic notions of repetition to explore more complex semantic and pragmatic functions. Its focus on empirically grounded analysis within a robust theoretical framework makes it a valuable contribution to the field. Methodologically, the research employs an effective corpus-based approach, drawing upon the extensive resources of the Corpus do Português, NOW, and Web/Dialects. This robust empirical foundation allows for the analysis of double diminutives in authentic contexts of use, lending strong credibility to its findings. The core results reveal that while intensification of DIM1 is indeed a primary function, DIM2 is also capable of introducing distinct semantic-pragmatic values such as affectivity, precision, and even depreciation. A particularly interesting observation is made regarding bases already implying a reduced dimension, such as *pitadinhazinha*, where both diminutives contribute to progressive intensification. To adequately model these complex interactions, the authors propose an innovative set of schemes grounded in Relational Morphology (Jackendoff; Audring, 2020), which offers a sophisticated mechanism for representing the emergent semantic and pragmatic properties of these formations. Overall, this paper offers a rigorous and insightful analysis of a relatively under-explored yet common linguistic phenomenon in Portuguese. Its key strength lies in providing empirical evidence that challenges a monolithic view of diminutive iteration, demonstrating the multifunctionality of the double diminutive. The theoretical framework adopted, coupled with the proposed representational schemes, provides a compelling avenue for future research into similar complex morphological structures across languages. This work not only deepens our understanding of Portuguese morphosemantics but also offers a valuable model for analyzing the interplay between morphology, semantics, and pragmatics, making it an essential read for scholars interested in linguistic typology, word formation, and semantic theory.
