"You need to be able to talk, guide, listen and have a bit of acting skill" - Skills and competences required for working with older people in remote home care as experienced by professionals Remote home care for older adults will increase strongly in the coming years. As a result, more research data are needed to support good remote care practices and training in this field. In this study, I explore the experiences and perceptions of professionals working in the elder care sector. I ask what kinds of skills are needed in remote visits and how the technology used shapes the interaction between the professional and the client. The research material consists of thematic interviews (N=12) conducted in two wellbeing services counties in spring 2024. The data have been analysed using qualitative content analysis. The results show that the following skills and competences are needed for conducting remote home visits: 1) adopting new ways of working, 2) persuasion skills, 3) technical and guiding skills, 4) the ability to be present in a digital interaction environment, 5) remote observation and assessment, and 6) good interaction skills. Both the implementation of remote technology and the remote contact are vulnerable processes, influenced by factors such as relationality, the technology itself and non-verbal communication. The results of this study can be utilised to develop training in remote home care.
This study addresses a highly pertinent and timely topic concerning the rapidly expanding field of remote home care for older adults. The authors aptly identify a critical gap in the literature regarding the specific skills and competencies required for effective remote care delivery and the influence of technology on professional-client interaction. By focusing on the experiences and perceptions of professionals, the research provides valuable insights into the practical realities of this evolving care model. The title itself, quoting a professional, immediately captures the nuanced and complex nature of the subject, setting a practical and experiential tone for the investigation. Methodologically, the study employs a qualitative approach, utilizing thematic interviews with a small but focused sample (N=12) from two wellbeing services counties. This qualitative design is well-suited to exploring the depth and richness of professional experiences, allowing for the emergence of nuanced themes that might be overlooked by quantitative methods. The findings are particularly strong in delineating six key skill sets essential for remote visits, ranging from technical and guiding skills to the often-underestimated ability to be present in a digital environment, persuasion, remote observation, and robust interaction skills. The identification of relationality, technology, and non-verbal communication as critical factors influencing the vulnerability of remote contact further enriches our understanding of this complex care setting. While the study offers significant contributions, its primary limitation lies in the relatively small sample size (N=12) and its specific geographical context (two wellbeing services counties). As a qualitative study, this is understandable, but it suggests that the findings, while insightful, may not be broadly generalizable across different healthcare systems or regions without further validation. Future research could benefit from larger-scale qualitative or mixed-methods studies, potentially incorporating perspectives from older adults receiving remote care, to provide a more comprehensive picture. Despite these limitations, this paper provides a robust foundation for understanding the professional demands of remote home care and offers crucial empirical evidence to guide the development of targeted training programs, thereby enhancing the quality and effectiveness of future remote care interventions.
