This study aims to examine the role of the Majelis Sholawat Al-Banjari (MSB) within the Banjar community in Serdang Bedagai. MSB has become an essential part of Banjar identity, which is widely recognized as a community deeply devoted to shalawat, influenced by the teachings of Tuan Guru Syaikh Zaini bin Abdul Ghani (Abah Guru Sekumpul). This research employs a qualitative method with an ethnographic approach, involving participatory observation and the researcher’s direct engagement in MSB activities. The findings reveal that the etno-religious identity of the Banjar people in Serdang Bedagai has long been shaped by the tradition of Aruh Maulud, practiced well before the establishment of MSB. The presence of MSB has further reinforced this identity through the recitation of Maulid Simtudduror. Beyond serving as a medium for preserving religious traditions, MSB also functions as a space that strengthens the ties of Banjar migrants and acts as a “reminder” of their ancestral homeland in Kalimantan. This etno-religious identity becomes even more deeply embedded through the practice of shalawat inherited from Abah Guru Sekumpul, making shalawat not only a form of spiritual expression but also a symbol of the Banjar people’s collective identity in Serdang Bedagai.
The study "Majelis Sholawat Al-Banjari: Etno-Religius dan Identitas Urang Banjar Perantauan Di Serdang Bedagai" presents a highly relevant and compelling exploration into the intersection of religious practice and ethnic identity within a migrant community. The abstract effectively outlines the research's objective to examine the significant role of the Majelis Sholawat Al-Banjari (MSB) in shaping and reinforcing the Banjar identity in Serdang Bedagai. The chosen qualitative methodology, particularly the ethnographic approach involving participatory observation and direct engagement, appears highly appropriate for deeply understanding the nuanced cultural and religious dynamics at play. This promises a rich, insider perspective on how spiritual devotion, specifically shalawat influenced by Abah Guru Sekumpul, becomes a cornerstone of collective self-definition for a diasporic community. The abstract highlights several key findings that underscore the MSB's multifaceted importance. It clearly establishes that while Banjar ethno-religious identity in Serdang Bedagai has deep roots in pre-existing traditions like Aruh Maulud, the MSB, through its recitation of Maulid Simtudduror, acts as a powerful contemporary reinforcement. Beyond its primary function as a vehicle for preserving religious traditions, the MSB emerges as a vital social space. It is presented as a locus for strengthening communal ties among Banjar migrants, serving as a poignant "reminder" of their ancestral homeland in Kalimantan. This dual role—spiritual and social—illustrates how shalawat transcends mere ritual, transforming into a deeply embedded symbol of collective identity, binding individuals to both their faith and their heritage. While the abstract provides a strong overview of the study's scope and initial findings, a full paper would benefit from further elaboration on certain aspects. For instance, exploring the *specific mechanisms* by which MSB strengthens migrant ties and acts as a "reminder" could add valuable depth – perhaps detailing the types of social activities, narratives shared, or leadership structures involved. Additionally, a deeper analysis of the unique characteristics and interpretations of Abah Guru Sekumpul's teachings within this specific MSB context, beyond general influence, could further illuminate its distinctiveness. Overall, this study offers a fascinating glimpse into the dynamic interplay of religion, ethnicity, and migration, providing important insights into how communities maintain their cultural distinctiveness in new environments. The research promises to be a significant contribution to understanding ethno-religious identity in the Indonesian context.
