Abstract

[ultima revisione Gennaio 2018]  During the research conducted within the thesis’s draft of  Bachelor’s Degree in 2010/2011, has emerged, in the council area of San Sperate, a settlement square sufficiently well-structured that returned important statements of proto-historic age, included in a time spans starting from the Middle Bronze Age until the Early Iron Age. The levelling and removals of stones perpetuated over the last 60 years to reclaim fields have jeopardized and damaged the structures of proto historic monuments, so it is difficult to determine the type and planimetry’s installation.

Review

The paper, titled "Emergenze monumentali di età nuragica dal territorio di San Sperate (CA)," provides a concise overview of newly identified proto-historic monumental remains within the San Sperate municipal area of Sardinia. Originating from an undergraduate thesis conducted in 2010/2011, the research highlights the discovery of an "articulated settlement pattern" comprising significant testimonies from the Middle Bronze Age through to the Early Iron Age. This initial disclosure holds promise for enriching our understanding of Nuragic settlement patterns and the broader proto-history of this particular region of Sardinia. A key strength of this work, as described in the abstract, lies in the very act of identifying and documenting these proto-historic sites, particularly given the challenging circumstances. The acknowledgement of an "articulated settlement pattern" is an intriguing detail, suggesting complex site relationships and chronological depth. Crucially, the research brings attention to archaeological resources that have been significantly compromised by agricultural practices over the past six decades. By bringing these "emergences" to light, the authors contribute to the ongoing effort of mapping and protecting the archaeological heritage of Sardinia, even when structures are heavily damaged. However, the abstract also clearly outlines a major limitation: the extensive damage caused by agricultural "levelling and removals of stones" over the past 60 years. This has severely impacted the structures of the proto-historic monuments, making it "difficult to determine the type and planimetry’s installation." While the identification of these sites is valuable, the abstract leaves open questions about the extent to which a definitive "articulated settlement pattern" can be established without clearer typological and planimetric data. Future work would ideally benefit from employing advanced non-invasive techniques to mitigate these challenges, such as detailed geophysical surveys, and a comparative analysis with better-preserved Nuragic complexes to infer potential functions and forms. The mention of a revision in January 2018 suggests ongoing development, which could address some of these points in a more comprehensive publication.
