Abstract

Penelitian ini berjudul “Makna Motif Pada Produk UMKM Sulaman Indah Mayang di Desa Padang Birik-birik Kecamatan Pariaman Utara Kota Pariaman”, bertujuan mendeskripsikan makna simbolik dan penempatan motif sulam pada produk UMKM Sulaman Indah Mayang. Sulaman tradisional Minangkabau tidak hanya berfungsi sebagai hiasan, tetapi mengandung nilai-nilai, filosofi sosial, dan ekspresi budaya lokal. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif deskriptif dengan teknik observasi langsung, wawancara mendalam, dan dokumentasi visual. Melalui metode observasi langsung dan wawancara dengan pemilik usaha, ditemukan bahwa motif-motif seperti bungo satangkai, kaluak paku, bungo pondiang, dan burung merak memiliki makna yang mendalam: melambangkan keanggunan, keteguhan, harapan, dan tanggung jawab dalam struktur adat Minangkabau. Penempatan setiap motif juga memperhatikan fungsi tubuh dan filosofi budaya, dimana motif utama ditempatkan pada bagian dada atau paha. Produk sulam dikerjakan secara manual dengan benang emas dan benang warna kontras, mencerminkan keahlian, ketelatenan, serta perpaduan nilai tradisi dan inovasi modern.
