Background : Poor sleep quality can be related to health conditions such as hypertension. Objective : To determine the relationship between sleep quality and the incidence of hypertension in adults at the Tanjung Hulu Community Health Center, East Pontianak. Method : This research uses an analytical observational research design with a cross-sectional study approach, namely the independent variable as risk and the dependent variable as effect. A total of 96 adult respondents were research subjects using a sleep quality questionnaire (PSQI) and blood pressure results in medical records. The data analysis technique used is univariate analysis and bivariate analysis using the Kendall's Tau-B test. Results : Based on the results of the analysis using the Kendall's Tau-B statistical test, the P value = 0.387 and the r value = - 0.089. Respondent characteristics including age were mostly 51.0% aged 36-45 years. Most of them are female, 71.9%. Most have jobs as much as 62.5%. Conclusion : There is no relationship between sleep quality and the incidence of hypertension in adults at the Tanjung Hulu Community Health Center, East Pontianak. Keywords : Sleep Quality, Incidence of Hypertension, Adults
This manuscript addresses a relevant public health issue concerning the potential relationship between sleep quality and hypertension among adults at a specific community health center. The topic is timely given the established links between sleep, lifestyle factors, and cardiovascular health, making its investigation in a local Indonesian context valuable. The study's objective is clearly stated, and the methodology, employing a cross-sectional design with the PSQI for sleep quality assessment and medical records for blood pressure, represents a straightforward and pragmatic approach to data collection. The inclusion of a defined population and setting contributes to the specific applicability of the findings. Despite its clear objective, the study presents several critical limitations that impact its scientific rigor and interpretation. A primary concern lies with the reported statistical results (P=0.387, r=-0.089) leading to a conclusion of "no relationship." While these statistics indeed indicate an absence of a significant linear association within this specific sample, the abstract lacks any discussion on why these findings diverge from general medical understanding or potential confounding factors that might obscure such a relationship. More crucially, the use of "incidence of hypertension" in the objective and conclusion is a fundamental methodological flaw. A cross-sectional study can only assess the prevalence or co-occurrence of conditions at a single point in time, not "incidence," which necessitates a longitudinal design to observe new cases over a period. This misapplication of terminology severely limits the study's ability to address its stated aim. In conclusion, while the study attempts to explore a vital health concern and reports an absence of a statistically significant relationship between sleep quality and hypertension in its investigated population, its utility is significantly undermined by methodological inaccuracies. The fundamental mismatch between the cross-sectional design and the objective of determining "incidence" compromises the validity of its conclusions. Future research in this area should meticulously refine the study design, particularly by adopting longitudinal approaches if causal pathways or true incidence are to be explored. Additionally, a more comprehensive analysis that considers a broader range of potential confounders (e.g., existing comorbidities, medication use, other lifestyle factors) and a robust discussion of the findings in the context of existing literature would significantly enhance the scientific contribution of such studies.
