The present study aims to explore the students’ voices in using OME TV media to improve English speaking skills among students and their reasons for using OME TV media in learning English. Following the qualitative case study method, the research data of this study were collected through semi-structured interviews with six students in Indonesian higher education. The findings revealed that most students view the use of OME TV as beneficial for them in shaping their English-speaking skills, enriching insights through English conversation with foreigners, showing self-existence using English, obtaining information about English, looking for relationships, and networking. In addition, the reasons for using OME TV include having entertainment, looking for friends to play games together, and building relationships and communication with friends. This study presents an implication of the need for learners to make use of technology including social media as a platform for learning English.
This study investigates a timely and relevant topic concerning the use of OME TV media to enhance English speaking skills among Indonesian university learners. The chosen qualitative case study approach, utilizing semi-structured interviews with six participants, is appropriate for exploring students' nuanced perspectives. The abstract effectively presents a range of compelling findings, highlighting OME TV's perceived benefits such as shaping speaking skills, enriching insights through cross-cultural conversation, fostering self-expression, and facilitating networking. Additionally, the identification of motivations beyond language learning, including entertainment, gaming, and social connection, offers a valuable, holistic understanding of students' engagement with this platform. While the study offers insightful findings, some areas could be further elaborated or clarified to strengthen its contribution. The term "optimizing" in the title suggests a systematic approach to skill development, which might warrant deeper exploration of how OME TV facilitates this beyond general improvement. Given the qualitative nature, the generalizability from six participants is inherently limited, a point that could be explicitly acknowledged in the full paper. Furthermore, while the abstract lists numerous benefits, a more balanced discussion incorporating potential challenges, drawbacks, or negative experiences with OME TV could provide a more comprehensive understanding of its use as a learning tool. The stated implication, that learners need to use technology for English learning, is rather broad and could be refined to offer more specific pedagogical or instructional recommendations. Overall, this study makes a valuable contribution by shedding light on an under-researched, informal language learning platform, particularly within the Indonesian higher education context. It effectively demonstrates students' agency in leveraging social media for language practice and social interaction, driven by both educational and social motivations. The findings provide useful insights for educators and researchers interested in technology-enhanced language learning, especially concerning motivation and informal learning environments. With some potential refinements to strengthen the methodological discussion and deepen the exploration of both benefits and challenges, this paper would be a strong addition to the literature on digital language learning.
