Abstract

Review

This paper investigates the intriguing phenomenon of Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) in the context of Shopee PayLater usage and its subsequent impact on the social well-being of productive-aged women in Mampang Prapatan, Jakarta. Employing a qualitative case study design with thematic analysis, the researchers sought to understand how digitally-driven economic FoMO, particularly the fear of missing discounts and promotions, plays out in an urban setting. With four active Shopee PayLater users as informants, the study delves into a timely and highly relevant issue, given the rapid expansion of digital financial services and their pervasive influence on consumer behavior in Indonesia. A key strength of this research lies in its nuanced findings, which move beyond simplistic assumptions. The study effectively demonstrates that consumerism fueled by FoMO is significantly amplified by low financial literacy and digital social norms, rather than being solely a gender-specific issue. This distinction is crucial for developing targeted interventions. Furthermore, the paper adeptly highlights the dual potential of Shopee PayLater: while uncontrolled use can lead to debt accumulation, stress, and social dysfunction, judicious application can indeed serve as an economic empowerment tool for women. This balanced perspective significantly contributes to our understanding of the complex interplay between psychosocial dynamics, digital consumption, and women's social well-being in the era of digital financialization. While offering valuable insights, the study's primary limitation lies in its small sample size of four informants. Although suitable for an in-depth case study, this restricted scope inherently limits the generalizability of the findings to the broader population of "productive-aged women in urban areas," as stated in the objective. Future research would benefit immensely from expanding the informant pool to include a more diverse range of socio-economic backgrounds and age groups, which could provide a richer understanding of the varying experiences and vulnerabilities. Additionally, a deeper theoretical engagement with the multifaceted concept of "social well-being" in the context of digital financialization would further strengthen the paper's analytical rigor. Despite these methodological considerations, the research serves as an important foundational step in exploring this critical area.
