Abstract

COVID-19 vaccination is an essential measure to reduce virus transmission, decrease morbidity, and strengthen community immunity. Nevertheless, doubts remain among adolescents, influenced by their level of knowledge and attitudes toward the vaccine. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between knowledge and attitudes toward the COVID-19 vaccine through audiovisual media among adolescents at SMP Negeri 6 Probolinggo City. A quasi-experimental design with a pretest–posttest control group was employed, involving 50 respondents selected through total sampling, consisting of 25 students in the intervention group and 25 in the control group. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon test. The results indicated a significant difference in knowledge and attitudes in the intervention group before and after receiving audiovisual-based education (p < 0.05), while no meaningful change was observed in the control group. These findings highlight that audiovisual media is effective in improving adolescents’ knowledge and attitudes toward COVID-19 vaccination.

Review

This study tackles a highly relevant public health challenge: COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy among adolescents, focusing on the critical roles of knowledge and attitude. The authors employed a quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest control group to investigate the impact of audiovisual media on these factors. The findings are significant, demonstrating that an audiovisual intervention effectively improved both knowledge and attitudes towards COVID-19 vaccination in the intervention group, while the control group showed no meaningful change. This primary finding offers a valuable contribution to understanding effective health communication strategies for this demographic. Methodologically, the use of a quasi-experimental design with a control group strengthens the internal validity of the study, allowing for a more robust assessment of the intervention's impact. The sample size of 50 respondents, divided equally into intervention and control groups via total sampling, provides a clear basis for comparison. The application of the Wilcoxon test for data analysis is appropriate for comparing paired samples when data may not be normally distributed, as is often the case with attitudinal and knowledge scores. While the abstract clearly outlines the design and key statistical findings, additional details regarding the specific content, duration, and delivery method of the audiovisual intervention, along with the psychometric properties of the knowledge and attitude measurement tools, would further enhance the study's reproducibility and allow for deeper interpretation of its specific strengths. The practical implications of these findings are substantial. By demonstrating the efficacy of audiovisual media in fostering positive knowledge and attitudes towards COVID-19 vaccination among adolescents, this research provides a clear recommendation for public health officials and educators. It suggests that tailored, engaging audiovisual content can be a powerful tool in addressing vaccine hesitancy and promoting informed decision-making among young people. This study is a commendable step towards developing evidence-based communication strategies, and future research could further explore the long-term impact of such interventions and the specific elements of audiovisual content that yield the most profound and lasting behavioral changes.
