Abstract

The integration of the blue economy and digital tourism has become a key driver of sustainable development in coastal regions. This study examines the interlinkage between these two concepts and explores platform-based monetization strategies for marine ecosystems. To quantitatively analyze the relationship between digital technology adoption, platform monetization efficiency, and the sustainability of marine ecosystems within the framework of the blue economy and digital tourism. This research employed a quantitative approach using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) on 85 marine tourism destinations in Indonesia selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through online surveys of tourism destination managers and secondary digital platform data spanning 2022–2024. The structural model demonstrated that digital technology adoption significantly influences monetization efficiency (β = 0.742, p < 0.001), which in turn positively impacts ecosystem sustainability (β = 0.631, p < 0.001). Digital platforms increased average revenue by 45–78% and operational efficiency by 32–56% across marine tourism destinations. Platform-based monetization strategies have proven effective in integrating the blue economy with digital tourism, though adequate infrastructure and skilled human resources remain prerequisites.

Review

This study critically examines the burgeoning intersection of the blue economy and digital tourism, focusing specifically on platform-based monetization strategies for marine ecosystems. The authors aim to quantitatively unravel the complex relationships between digital technology adoption, platform monetization efficiency, and the sustainability of marine ecosystems, set within the context of sustainable development in coastal regions. This research makes a pertinent contribution by addressing a timely topic that holds significant implications for policymakers and tourism stakeholders alike, particularly in developing economies heavily reliant on marine resources. Employing a robust quantitative methodology, the study utilizes Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to analyze data collected from 85 purposively sampled marine tourism destinations across Indonesia. Data triangulation was achieved through online surveys administered to tourism destination managers and secondary digital platform data spanning 2022–2024. The findings unequivocally demonstrate that digital technology adoption exerts a strong positive influence on monetization efficiency (β = 0.742, p < 0.001). Crucially, this enhanced monetization efficiency, in turn, significantly contributes to the sustainability of marine ecosystems (β = 0.631, p < 0.001). Furthermore, the study quantifies the tangible benefits of digital platforms, reporting average revenue increases of 45–78% and operational efficiency gains of 32–56% across the sampled destinations. The research effectively highlights the transformative potential of platform-based monetization in integrating blue economy principles with digital tourism, providing compelling empirical evidence from a significant regional context. While the quantitative rigor of SEM is a strength, the reliance on purposive sampling for destination selection and potentially manager perceptions for some survey data might warrant careful consideration regarding generalizability beyond the Indonesian context. Nevertheless, the study's concluding emphasis on the necessity of adequate infrastructure and skilled human resources serves as a vital caveat and a practical implication for successful implementation. This work offers valuable insights for promoting sustainable marine tourism and warrants further exploration into scaling these strategies and addressing infrastructural challenges in diverse geographical settings.
