Abstract

Background: Choosing a sitting position when following the lecture process is a routine thing and is usually done every day by students, this aims to further maximize the learning process. By occupying a strategic sitting position, it will be easier to interact, either with lecturers or with classmates. However, the selection of this sitting position often causes complaints in the form of back pain if the sitting position occupied is not ergonomic. Methods: This research is a descriptive survey research. The sample in this study was the third semester students of class A1, A2 and A3 totaling 110 students who were selected using purposive sampling technique. This research was conducted in September 2016-February 2017. The results showed that in class A1 there were 6 students (17.0%) with mild pain and 1 person (2.9%) with moderate pain. In class A2 there are 2 students (5.7%) with mild pain and 2 students (5.7%) with moderate pain. In class A3 there are 2 students (5.7%) with mild pain, 1 student (2.9%) with moderate pain and 1 student (2.9%) with severe pain. Conclusion: Of the 110 students who took the biostatistics course, there were 15 students who experienced back pain. Suggestion: choose a strategic and ergonomic position so that back pain during the learning process is not expected to occur. Keywords: Back Pain Percentage, Sitting Position

Review

This study addresses a highly relevant issue concerning student well-being: the prevalence of back pain stemming from prolonged sitting during lectures. The authors aim to describe the percentage of back pain experienced by students, positing a link to their chosen sitting positions. The methodology employed, a descriptive survey with a sample of 110 third-semester students selected via purposive sampling, is clearly outlined in terms of scope, sample size, and duration. This clear approach provides foundational data on the extent of back pain among students in a specific academic setting, thereby highlighting a potentially significant health concern that warrants further attention. While the study successfully quantifies the *prevalence* of back pain, a key limitation lies in its purely descriptive nature, which prevents it from establishing a direct *causal relationship* or correlation between specific sitting positions and the incidence or severity of back pain. The title, "Presentase Kejadian Nyeri Punggung Mahasiswa Berdasarkan Pemilihan Posisi Duduk," suggests an analysis *based on* different sitting positions, yet the abstract's results only present the percentage of students experiencing pain, broken down by class and severity, without linking these outcomes to the *types* of sitting positions chosen. This leaves the reader without empirical evidence connecting specific non-ergonomic choices to the observed pain, despite the background statement suggesting such a link. Furthermore, the overall conclusion states 15 students experienced back pain, but an overall percentage relative to the 110-student sample would provide a clearer epidemiological context. Overall, this study serves as a valuable initial step in identifying back pain as a problem among university students during lectures. To build upon this foundation, future research should move beyond a descriptive approach to conduct analytical studies that investigate the specific types of sitting positions students adopt, classify them as ergonomic or non-ergonomic, and then correlate these positions directly with the development and severity of back pain. Additionally, exploring the factors influencing students' choice of sitting positions (e.g., classroom layout, personal habits, awareness of ergonomics) would provide crucial insights for developing targeted interventions. Such future studies could provide actionable recommendations to promote ergonomic practices and improve student health during academic activities.
