Abstract

Review

This study provides a valuable initial assessment of the physicochemical conditions and plankton community structure in the Jembayan River, Loa Kulu sub-district, Kutai Kartanegara. The research addresses an important ecological aspect of local aquatic ecosystems, offering foundational baseline data that can be crucial for environmental monitoring and management in a region potentially facing anthropogenic pressures. The investigation into both environmental parameters and the biological community structure contributes to a holistic understanding of this specific river system. The methodology included assessing key environmental parameters such as brightness (turbidity), temperature, salinity, Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), and pH, alongside an extensive analysis of the plankton community. The findings indicate a turbid freshwater environment with a notably low pH, although temperature and TDS ranges were generally deemed suitable or normal for aquatic biota. A significant strength is the detailed enumeration of plankton, identifying 10 distinct classes. Plankton abundance varied across the three sampling stations, and community indices revealed moderate diversity (H'), an uneven distribution of individuals (E), and importantly, a lack of dominance by any single plankton species (D). These results offer a crucial preliminary characterization of the biological health of the Jembayan River. While providing a useful snapshot, the abstract could be strengthened by offering greater detail regarding the study's temporal scope; the phrase "selama penelitian" (during the research) lacks specificity on the duration or frequency of sampling, which is critical for ecological studies given the dynamic nature of aquatic environments. Furthermore, deeper interpretation and contextualization of the findings would enhance the paper's overall impact. For instance, explaining the potential causes for the observed turbidity and particularly the low pH, and discussing their ecological implications for the plankton community and other aquatic life, would significantly enrich the discussion. Comparison of the results with regional or global benchmarks for similar river systems would also strengthen the scientific contribution. Addressing these points would transform the current descriptive findings into a more robust and insightful contribution to aquatic ecology.
