Abstract

The socialization activity on hoax news in Grogol Village, Weru Subdistrict, Sukoharjo Regency, was conducted to increase public awareness about the dangers of hoax news and ways to prevent it. Using a community education approach, the team provided education on the definition, characteristics, and risks of hoax news, as well as how to protect themselves from the spread of fake news. This activity involved hands-on practice of checking the truth of the news using the website cekhoaks.id and promoting the habit of "Filter before sharing". A total of 50 residents actively participated in the "Facts Against Hoax: Socialization of Protecting Yourself from the Spread of Hoax News". As a result, the people of Grogol Village showed an increased awareness to check the content of news before sharing it. This activity is expected to minimize the spread of hoax news in the community and become part of a more critical culture in using social media. Thus, the people of Grogol Village can be wiser in dealing with information circulating on social media, so as to maintain the security and integrity of information in their community.

Review

The submitted work, titled "SOCIALIZATION ON PREVENTING THE SPREAD OF HOAX NEWS IN ONLINE NEWS MEDIA AT GROGOL VILLAGE, WERU, SUKOHARJO," addresses a highly pertinent and critical issue in contemporary digital society: the proliferation of hoax news. The abstract clearly outlines a community-based intervention aimed at enhancing public awareness and equipping residents with practical tools to identify and combat misinformation. The use of a community education approach, involving hands-on practice with tools like `cekhoaks.id` and promoting the "Filter before sharing" mantra, demonstrates a commendable practical orientation. The reported outcome of increased awareness among the 50 participating residents of Grogol Village suggests a positive immediate impact, aligning with the project's primary objective of fostering a more critical engagement with online information. While the initiative's intent and reported initial success are laudable, the abstract leaves several methodological aspects open for further elaboration. Specifically, the measurement of "increased awareness" could benefit from greater detail; it is unclear how this awareness was quantitatively or qualitatively assessed beyond a general observation. Providing insights into the pre- and post-intervention knowledge levels or self-reported behavioral changes would significantly strengthen the findings. Furthermore, while the abstract states the activity "is expected to minimize the spread of hoax news," this represents a desired long-term outcome rather than a direct, measured result of the reported intervention. Future iterations or subsequent studies could aim to track actual reductions in sharing behavior or sustained changes in information processing over time, moving beyond immediate awareness to demonstrable behavioral shifts. Overall, this socialization activity represents a valuable and timely local intervention to address a pervasive global challenge. The practical, direct engagement with community members on media literacy is highly commendable and serves as a promising model for similar initiatives in other communities. For future publications, including more rigorous data collection on impact and a deeper analysis of the intervention's replicability and scalability would enhance its academic contribution. Nonetheless, the paper presents a clear effort towards empowering citizens against misinformation and contributing to a more informed and critical digital culture, making a relevant contribution to the field of community education and media literacy.
