Review

This study presents a focused qualitative analysis of the representation of love between the main characters, Akito and Haruna, in the recently released film *Drawing Closer* (2024). Employing a literary psychology approach, the research aims to dissect the forms of love exhibited by Akito towards Haruna, guided by Robert J. Sternberg's Triangular Theory of Love. The chosen methodology, involving qualitative description and meticulous note-taking of character dialogues, appears well-suited to the interpretive demands of analyzing narrative portrayals of complex human emotions, offering a detailed exploration of intimacy, passion, and commitment within their relationship. The application of Sternberg's widely recognized theory provides a robust theoretical framework for this investigation, allowing for a structured examination of the nuanced dynamics of love. The abstract highlights a key finding: Akito's love primarily manifests through the components of intimacy and commitment, evidenced by nine specific elements in his attitudes and behaviors. This finding is particularly intriguing, as it implicitly suggests the absence or diminished presence of 'passion' in Akito's portrayal, prompting deeper consideration of how the film constructs relationships, especially given the narrative context hinted at by the title. Identifying the overarching theme of friendship and love further enriches the understanding of their relational dynamics, moving beyond simple romantic tropes. Overall, this study promises a valuable contribution to both film studies and the field of literary psychology by offering a theoretically informed analysis of a contemporary cinematic narrative. By meticulously applying Sternberg's model, the research provides specific insights into how love is represented on screen, particularly from the perspective of one protagonist. The findings, particularly the specific components of love identified, offer a solid foundation for understanding relational dynamics and their significance in contemporary narratives, making it a relevant piece for scholars interested in narrative analysis and emotional representation in media.
