Review

The study titled "PERAN PENYULUH PERTANIAN DALAM MENINGKATKAN KESEJAHTERAAN PETANI JAGUNG DI DESA BALIARA KECAMATAN PARIGI BARAT KABUPATEN PARIGI MOUTONG" addresses a highly pertinent issue concerning agricultural extension and farmer welfare, particularly for corn farmers in a specific rural Indonesian context. Given the persistent challenges faced by farmers, especially regarding marketing and income generation, an investigation into the role of agricultural extension workers is crucial for developing effective strategies to enhance rural livelihoods. The research aims to evaluate how these extension workers function as facilitators and educators in contributing to the welfare of corn farmers in Desa Baliara, offering valuable insights into the practical impact of these vital agents. Methodologically, the study reportedly employed a descriptive qualitative approach, utilizing a Likert scale for data analysis, drawing from a sample of 40 farmers. Data collection involved both primary and secondary sources, with an emphasis on validity testing. The abstract presents compelling results: extension workers were perceived as "very instrumental" in their roles as facilitators (85%) and educators (81%). Furthermore, their perceived impact on farmer income scored 78%, categorized as a significant contribution to welfare improvement. While these findings quantitatively underscore the perceived importance of extension services, a critical detail in the abstract states the study execution period as "Oktober hingga Desember 2024," which suggests the research is planned for the future. This temporal discrepancy raises a significant question about whether the reported results are projections or if the execution date is a typographical error, which needs urgent clarification for proper evaluation of the findings. The study's strength lies in its direct focus on a specific community and crop, providing localized insights into the perceived effectiveness of agricultural extension services. The quantitative presentation of qualitative roles offers a clear snapshot of farmer perceptions regarding the extension workers' contribution. However, beyond the potential temporal incongruity, the abstract could benefit from a clearer articulation of the theoretical framework guiding the investigation into welfare improvement. While "descriptive qualitative" is mentioned, the analysis primarily relies on quantified Likert scores, which might imply limited in-depth exploration of *why* or *how* these roles translate into specific welfare changes beyond the reported percentages. Future research could explore the specific mechanisms through which facilitation and education lead to income increases, perhaps employing a mixed-methods approach with more extensive qualitative interviews or a comparative design to strengthen causal inferences. Nonetheless, the findings, if confirmed as actual results, strongly support the continued investment in and enhancement of agricultural extension services as a key driver for farmer welfare in the region.
