Abstract

Entrepreneurship is believed to be able to create jobs and generate economic growth. The entrepreneurial spirit is the most significant economic development in the history of business. New businesses built by entrepreneurs can maintain market growth and contribute to the national economy. This research aims to examine the variables of attitude, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, and tendency to act influencing entrepreneurial intentions which are moderated by self-identity variables. This research has four hypotheses. Data was collected from 100 respondents obtained from an online questionnaire distributed to students in Yogyakarta who were studying in the entrepreneurship department/study program or had taken entrepreneurship courses with a sampling technique using purposive sampling. The data was then analyzed using structural equation modeling techniques with the help of SmartPLS 3 software.

Review

This study embarks on a pertinent investigation into the drivers of entrepreneurial intention, a topic of significant economic and societal relevance given entrepreneurship's role in job creation and national development. The research is appropriately grounded in established frameworks, implicitly extending the Theory of Planned Behavior by examining attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, and a "tendency to act" as antecedents to entrepreneurial intentions. A key strength lies in its explicit focus on self-identity as a moderating variable, an insightful addition that promises to deepen our understanding of the psychological mechanisms influencing entrepreneurial pursuits among students. The clarity of the research objective and the formulation of four specific hypotheses provide a clear direction for the inquiry. However, the methodological approach, as outlined, presents several points for consideration. While the application of Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) with SmartPLS 3 is a suitable choice for analyzing complex relationships, the reported sample size of 100 respondents is relatively small for robust SEM analyses, particularly when dealing with multiple latent variables and interaction effects. This limited sample size could impact the statistical power to detect significant effects and potentially compromise the generalizability of the findings. Furthermore, the use of purposive sampling from a specific student population in Yogyakarta (those in entrepreneurship programs or who have taken relevant courses), while providing a focused group, might limit the external validity of the results to broader student populations or different cultural contexts. The reliance on an online questionnaire also introduces potential biases common to self-report data. Despite these methodological caveats, the research holds potential to contribute valuable insights into the interplay of self-identity within the entrepreneurial intention framework. Should significant findings emerge regarding the moderating role of self-identity, this study could offer practical implications for curriculum design in entrepreneurship education, targeted mentorship programs, or policy initiatives aimed at fostering entrepreneurial mindsets by emphasizing identity development. Future research would benefit from expanding the sample size and diversifying the respondent pool to enhance generalizability. A deeper conceptualization and measurement of the "tendency to act" variable, which appears to be a unique addition to the standard TPB model, would also strengthen the theoretical contribution of subsequent studies.
