Review

The study, "Peran Duta Generasi Berencana (GenRe) dalam Mencegah Pernikahan Dini: Analisis Sosiologis di Kota Blitar," addresses the pertinent social issue of early marriage in Blitar City, Indonesia, and examines the role of the GenRe Ambassadors program developed by BKKBN to mitigate this problem. Utilizing a descriptive qualitative approach with data gathered through observation, interviews, and documentation, the research aims to elucidate the specific functions and impact of these ambassadors. The application of Robert K. Merton's functional theory provides a robust sociological framework for analyzing both the intended and unintended consequences of their actions. The findings of this research comprehensively delineate the multifaceted roles adopted by GenRe Ambassadors in preventing early marriage. They are identified as vital public relations figures, role models, peer counselors, and motivators. Furthermore, the study effectively distinguishes between the manifest and latent functions of their involvement. Manifest functions include demonstrably increasing adolescents' knowledge and awareness regarding the risks of early marriage through socialization activities, coupled with the ambassadors' personal commitment to abstain from early marriage. Crucially, the latent functions reveal broader developmental benefits, fostering curiosity and self-directed learning among participants, and cultivating significant personal growth in the ambassadors themselves, such as enhanced self-confidence, public speaking skills, networking abilities, and self-presentation (grooming). Overall, this paper offers a valuable sociological insight into the practical implementation and impact of youth-led programs in addressing critical social issues. By employing Merton's functional theory, it moves beyond mere description to provide an analytical understanding of how the GenRe program operates within its social context, highlighting both its direct achievements and its often-overlooked indirect benefits. While the qualitative nature provides rich contextual detail, future research could potentially explore the quantitative effectiveness of these roles or conduct comparative studies across different regions to further generalize these findings. Nevertheless, this study makes a significant contribution to understanding community-based interventions against early marriage and the broader development of youth leadership in Indonesia.
