Abstract

An unbalanced diet and low consumption of fruits and vegetables are part of an unhealthy lifestyle that increases the risk of non-communicable diseases among students and lecturers. To raise awareness of the importance of healthy eating, this community service activity was carried out through a detox juice campaign based on persuasive communication. The method used was Participatory Action Research (PAR), with a pretest and posttest evaluation approach involving fifty students and three lecturers. The campaign lasted for three days and involved the distribution of fruit and vegetable juices, direct education, and the dissemination of information through social media and printed materials. The results showed a significant improvement in the participants' attitudes and perceptions, which were measured using pretest and posttest questionnaires on awareness, attitudes, and behavioral intentions regarding detox juice consumption and the benefits of eating vegetables and fruit. Some participants also reported improvements in body freshness and digestion. Thus, the persuasive communication-based detox juice campaign was effective in increasing awareness and intention to consume healthy foods, and has the potential to be developed in similar activities with a wider scope.

Review

This paper addresses a highly pertinent public health challenge: the prevalence of unhealthy lifestyles, particularly unbalanced diets and low fruit and vegetable consumption, among university students and lecturers. The authors present a community service initiative designed to enhance awareness of healthy eating habits through a persuasive detox juice campaign. Employing a Participatory Action Research (PAR) methodology with a pretest-posttest design, the study involved a focused group of fifty students and three lecturers over a three-day period. The core intervention combined the distribution of fruit and vegetable juices with direct education and multi-platform information dissemination. The primary finding indicates a significant positive shift in participants' awareness, attitudes, and behavioral intentions towards healthy food choices. The study's strength lies in its practical, direct engagement approach and the application of persuasive communication, which demonstrably impacted participants' perceptions in a short timeframe. The integration of direct education alongside tangible product distribution (detox juices) appears to be an effective strategy for immediate attitude adjustment. Furthermore, the self-reported improvements in body freshness and digestion, while subjective, offer qualitative support for the perceived benefits of the intervention, potentially reinforcing positive behavioral intentions. This initiative makes a valuable contribution by demonstrating a viable model for promoting healthy eating within an academic community, particularly through an accessible and appealing method like detox juice. While the findings are encouraging, several aspects warrant further consideration for future development and robust validation. The short three-day campaign duration, coupled with the relatively small sample size, limits the generalizability and assessment of sustained behavioral change beyond initial intentions. Future research would benefit immensely from longer intervention periods and follow-up studies to measure actual, long-term dietary modifications and health outcomes, rather than solely relying on attitude and intention shifts. Additionally, given the potentially ambiguous nature of "detox juice" in a scientific context, a more detailed explanation of its specific nutritional composition and the educational messages delivered would enhance the study's scientific rigor and allow for replication. Expanding the scope to a larger and more diverse population, as suggested by the authors, would also be crucial for broader public health impact.
