Abstract

This community service program aims to enhance the creativity and digital literacy of kindergarten teachers through training in graphic novel learning media based on the Pixton application. The program was implemented using a participatory approach grounded in continuous mentoring, involving 10 teachers from TK Pertiwi Sowan Kidul, Jepara Regency, as partners. Evaluation instruments consisted of pre-test and post-test questionnaires, which were analyzed using descriptive quantitative techniques through gain score and normalized gain (N-gain) calculations. The results showed significant improvement across all indicators, with the average pre-test score of 43.3% increasing to 91.7% in the post-test, while the N-gain was categorized as high. In addition to improving technical competence, the program also had a positive impact on teachers’ attitudes, self-confidence, and active participation in developing innovative learning media. The graphic novel media produced were considered pedagogically relevant and practically applicable in early childhood education. This program contributes to improving the quality of the learning process, strengthening the teacher learning community, and has the potential to be replicated in other early childhood education contexts.

Review

This paper presents a timely and relevant community service initiative focused on enhancing critical skills for early childhood educators. The program, aimed at teachers from TK Pertiwi Sowan Kidul, addresses the crucial need for digital literacy and creative pedagogical approaches in contemporary education through training in Pixton-based graphic novel development. The methodology, utilizing a participatory approach with continuous mentoring and pre- and post-test evaluations, appears sound for a service-oriented project focused on practical skill development and immediate impact. A key strength of this program lies in its demonstrably positive outcomes. The reported significant increase in average scores from 43.3% to 91.7% and the categorization of the N-gain as "high" clearly indicate the program's effectiveness in improving both the technical competence of teachers and, presumably, their practical application of these skills. Beyond these quantitative improvements, the abstract highlights valuable qualitative impacts, such as enhanced teacher attitudes, self-confidence, and active participation in developing innovative learning media. The production of pedagogically relevant and practical graphic novel media further underscores the program's success and its immediate applicability within the classroom, offering a strong foundation for improving the quality of learning and strengthening professional communities. While the abstract clearly outlines the impressive short-term gains, a more detailed discussion on the specific facets of "creativity" and "digital literacy" that improved would further enrich the findings for a journal audience. For instance, elucidating whether teachers demonstrated growth in narrative design, visual storytelling, specific digital tool proficiency, or critical evaluation of digital content would provide deeper insights. Future reporting could also benefit from exploring the sustainability of these newfound skills and media development efforts beyond the program's duration, perhaps through follow-up observations or qualitative data on actual classroom integration. Nonetheless, this initiative serves as an excellent model for professional development, offering valuable insights into fostering innovation among early childhood educators and holding strong potential for replication in similar contexts.
