Abstract

En Amérique du Nord, plus de 70 millions de personnes parlent l’anglais et une langue romane, souvent l’espagnol. De nombreux étudiants rejoignent l’université avec des compétences bilingues ou plurilingues. Le cours Intercomprehension of the Romance Languages: a Pathway to Plurilingualism (California State University, Long Beach (2014–2026), St. Lawrence University (2018), et Bryant University (2023–2026)) vise à développer ce potentiel. Cet article prolonge une étude antérieure (Oliva & Gómez Larriva, 2020) sur le score PCA (Prédisposition, Confiance, Aptitude), en se concentrant sur la manière dont les étudiants utilisent leur répertoire linguistique pour aborder des langues inconnues, notamment à travers les stratégies de proximité, selon l’idée que « [n]o foreign language is totally unknown territory » (McCann et al., 2003, p. 8). L’article examine aussi comment l’étude de textes en langues germaniques peut renforcer la confiance des étudiants dans la lecture de textes en langues romanes, révélant l’applicabilité des stratégies intercompréhensives au-delà de la famille des langues romanes.
