Abstract

The United States gives citizens the right to own guns and has developed a specific culture of gun presence in everyday life. However, this privilege raises many controversies, and gun-related deaths are one of the most common causes of death in the U.S. Media often report on tragic shootings in the country. Nonetheless, there is still no clear regulation of legal issues in the field of gun control. This text is devoted to the issue of the March for Our Lives (MFOL) social movement created by a group of students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. The movement was established in response to a shooting that occurred at the school on February 14, 2018. The massacre caused shock almost all over the United States and gave rise to a series of great demonstrations in favor of gun control, which turned into the March For Our Lives social movement. Why did this movement appear after the events at the Parkland school, and what was its formation like? Did the term “potential tipping point” in the context of gun control and MFOL come true? What is the balance between the organizers’ assumptions and the actual results? This text analyzes the events of 2018 at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and attempts to answer the question about the essence of the March for Our Lives movement.

Review

The proposed paper, "#NeverAgainMSD and the March for Our Lives Movement," addresses a highly relevant and pressing issue in contemporary American society: the emergence and impact of the March for Our Lives (MFOL) movement in response to the tragic 2018 Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting. The abstract effectively situates the movement within the broader context of persistent gun violence, the absence of robust gun control legislation, and the unique challenges posed by the Second Amendment. By focusing on MFOL, the paper aims to explore a significant example of youth-led activism and its potential to influence public discourse and policy on a contentious issue. While the topic is undoubtedly important, the abstract currently lacks specificity regarding the analytical framework and methodology. It raises several pertinent questions, such as the genesis and formation of MFOL, the realization of a "potential tipping point," and the congruence between organizational goals and outcomes. However, the abstract does not articulate *how* these complex questions will be addressed. Phrases like "This text analyzes the events" and "attempts to answer the question about the essence" are too vague for an academic paper. A robust review would expect some indication of theoretical grounding (e.g., social movement theory, political communication, youth activism studies), the type of data to be utilized (e.g., media analysis, interviews, archival research), and the analytical methods employed. Without this, it's unclear if the paper intends to be a descriptive account, a qualitative analysis, or a more quantitative assessment of impact. To strengthen the paper, the authors should significantly clarify their methodological approach and theoretical lens. For instance, explaining which social movement theories will be applied to understand MFOL's emergence and formation would provide a strong foundation. Furthermore, detailing the specific data sources (e.g., protest attendance data, legislative outcomes, public opinion polls, MFOL's official communications, media coverage) and analytical techniques would enhance the paper's academic rigor. The question of a "potential tipping point" is particularly ambitious and would require a clear definition of what constitutes such a point, alongside a rigorous, evidence-based assessment of its realization or lack thereof. Refining these elements will allow the paper to move beyond a descriptive narrative to offer a more profound and evidence-backed contribution to the literature on social movements and gun control activism.
