Abstract

Review

The paper, "Motivasi Petani dalam Penerapan Teknologi Vermikompos di Desa Gentan Kecamatan Kranggan Kabupaten Temanggung," addresses a pertinent issue in sustainable agriculture: the adoption of organic fertilization technologies like vermicomposting. Recognizing the dual challenge of declining soil fertility and over-reliance on chemical inputs, the study aims to elucidate the motivational factors influencing farmers' uptake of vermicompost technology in a specific Indonesian village. Through a quantitative descriptive approach with 24 respondents, the research investigates farmer motivation across three key aspects: autonomy, competence, and relatedness. The core finding reveals high levels of autonomy and relatedness motivation, yet a moderate level of competence motivation, ultimately suggesting a critical area for intervention. This study offers valuable initial insights into the psychological drivers of agricultural technology adoption. Its strength lies in its focus on specific motivational constructs, providing a more nuanced understanding than a general 'attitude towards' approach. The clear identification of moderate competence motivation points directly to a practical area for development, suggesting that skill-building and knowledge transfer are crucial for promoting vermicompost adoption. However, a significant limitation stems from the relatively small sample size of 24 respondents. While acceptable for preliminary or exploratory work, this size restricts the generalizability of the findings and limits the depth of statistical analysis typically associated with quantitative studies. Further detail on the specific instruments used to measure these motivational aspects would also enhance the methodological transparency. In conclusion, the research effectively highlights that while farmers in Desa Gentan possess a strong intrinsic drive (autonomy) and social connectedness (relatedness) towards vermicompost technology, their perceived competence remains a bottleneck for wider and more sustainable adoption. The study's recommendation for increased farmer competence is well-supported by its findings and carries significant practical implications for agricultural extension services and policymakers. Future research could benefit from a larger and more diverse sample to validate these findings and explore the underlying reasons for the observed competence gap. Additionally, incorporating qualitative methods could provide deeper contextual understanding of farmer perceptions and the specific challenges they face in developing vermicompost skills, thereby offering a more comprehensive basis for intervention strategies.
