Abstract

Annie Ernaux's L'Événement is a novel that depicts the oppression of women by a patriarchal society that considers them “other”, which means they have no control over their bodies. As a result, they have no choice but to control their sexuality and reproduction. Awareness of the oppression suffered by women provokes resistance on the part of female characters to gain authority over their bodies. The aim of this study is to examine the forms of oppression with regard to women's bodily authority and women's struggle to obtain their bodily authority. This research uses a qualitative and feminist approach. The material object of this research is Annie Ernaux's novel L'Événement, and the formal object is women's bodily authority, which is in line with Simone de Beauvoir's concept of existentialist feminism. The results showed that the oppression of women's body authority manifested itself in the form of sexual control, reproductive control and alienation. The conclusion is that, in the novel L'Événement, the female characters suffer oppression of their bodily authority, particularly in matters of sexuality and reproduction, but that the female characters fight against this oppression.

Review

This paper offers a pertinent and focused analysis of Annie Ernaux's *L'Événement*, centering on the crucial theme of female bodily authority within a patriarchal societal framework. The study effectively articulates its aim: to delineate the forms of oppression that deny women control over their bodies, particularly in matters of sexuality and reproduction, and to explore the subsequent resistance enacted by female characters. Employing a qualitative and feminist methodology, the research positions itself as a vital contribution to understanding the novel's profound social commentary on gendered power dynamics. A significant strength of this work lies in its astute selection of *L'Événement* as its material object. Ernaux's unflinching portrayal of personal and collective female experience provides fertile ground for examining the proposed themes of bodily autonomy and societal control. Furthermore, the explicit grounding of the formal object – women's bodily authority – within Simone de Beauvoir's existentialist feminism offers a robust and well-established theoretical framework, promising a rigorous analysis of concepts such as "otherness," alienation, and the pursuit of freedom. The abstract clearly outlines the expected findings, identifying sexual control, reproductive control, and alienation as key manifestations of oppression. While the abstract clearly outlines the study's scope and findings, the full paper would benefit from a deeper exploration of the *nuances* of the female characters' struggle and resistance. Expanding on how these characters actively fight against oppression, perhaps detailing different facets or stages of their resistance beyond a general statement, would enrich the analysis. Additionally, considering the broader implications of these findings for contemporary discussions on bodily autonomy and reproductive rights, linking Ernaux's work more explicitly to present-day feminist discourse, could further amplify the paper's impact and relevance.
