Abstract

The storage of pharmaceutical supplies is an essential activity in the management of medicines in pharmacies, aiming to maintain the quality, stability, and safety of drugs. This study aimed to assess the compliance of pharmaceutical storage practices in a pharmacy with applicable standards. The research used a descriptive approach through direct observation of facilities, procedures, and storage systems. The results showed that most storage activities were in accordance with standards, such as drug arrangement in alphabetical order, the application of FIFO and FEFO methods, and maintaining cleanliness in the storage area. However, several aspects still need improvement, including the absence of thermometers and temperature recording cards in refrigerators, as well as the lack of separation and special labeling for LASA and High Alert medications. In conclusion, the pharmaceutical storage practices in the pharmacy were generally good, but improvements are needed in monitoring high-risk drugs and temperature control to ensure the quality and safety of medicines.

Review

This study, "Gambaran Penyimpanan Obat di Apotek X Kota Pekalongan," investigates a fundamentally important aspect of pharmaceutical care: the storage of medicines in a community pharmacy setting. The aim of assessing compliance with established standards is highly pertinent, given the direct implications for drug quality, stability, and patient safety. Utilizing a descriptive approach grounded in direct observation, the research offers a practical and immediate evaluation of current practices, identifying both strengths and crucial areas for improvement within the specified pharmacy. The methodology of direct observation is well-suited for this descriptive study, providing an objective and real-time assessment of storage conditions and operational procedures. The findings commendably illustrate that Apotek X adheres to several key good storage practices. These include the systematic arrangement of drugs alphabetically, consistent application of FIFO (First-In, First-Out) and FEFO (First-Expired, First-Out) principles, and diligent maintenance of cleanliness within the storage areas. These positive observations indicate a commendable level of organization and commitment to maintaining basic drug integrity. Despite these strengths, the study reveals critical deficiencies that warrant significant attention. The absence of thermometers and temperature recording cards in refrigerators poses a risk to the quality and efficacy of temperature-sensitive medications, as it prevents adequate monitoring and control of storage conditions. Furthermore, the lack of distinct separation and special labeling for LASA (Look-Alike, Sound-Alike) and High Alert medications is a serious patient safety concern, increasing the potential for medication errors. While the overall storage practices were found to be generally good, these specific areas of weakness highlight an urgent need for enhanced vigilance and the implementation of more robust safety protocols to ensure comprehensive drug quality and patient safety.
