Abstract

Sartre A fal című novellájának főhőse, Pablo Ibbieta a spanyol polgárháborúban a köztársaságiak oldalán harcolt, majd a Franco tábornok vezette rezsim fogságába esve azt az ultimátumot kapja fogva tartóitól, hogy ha elárulja ugyancsak üldözött barátja tartózkodási helyét, megmenekülhet a kivégzéstől. Ibbieta pontosan tudja, hogy barátja az unokatestvéreinél rejtőzött el, a várostól négy kilométernyire, de nem fedi fel a katonák előtt a rejtekhelyét. Meg akarja tréfálni a falangistákat, „látni akarta, hogy pattannak fel, hogy húzzák meg a derékszíjukat, és adják ki a parancsokat nagy fontoskodva”, ezért azt mondja nekik, hogy a temetőben bújt el, valamelyik sírboltban vagy a sírásók kunyhójában (Sartre 1939/1982. 121–122). A történet drámai fordulata (spoiler!), hogy Ibbieta barátja tényleg a temetőben bújt el, a sírásók kunyhójában, ahol a katonák megtalálták és tűzharcban megölték.
