Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe the construction of tweets on the X @Pontifex account (January to April 2025), to describe Van Dijk's critical discourse analysis of Pope Francis' tweets (posts) on the X @Pontifex account. This study is a qualitative study using the critical discourse analysis method of the Teun A. Van Dijk model. The results of the study show that Pope Francis' servant leadership has the following characteristics: listening, teaching, empathy, healing, awareness, persuasion, conceptualization, futuristic, management, commitment, and building community. Macrostructure is related to the topic: gratitude, brotherhood, peace, exemplary, service, love, forgiveness, repentance, humanity, diplomacy of truth, forgiveness, freedom and justice. Superstructure is done by placing it at the beginning of the paragraph as an emphasis. Microstructure includes semantics, syntax, stylistics and rhetoric. Semantically, the meaning is conveyed explicitly or directly. Through @Pontifex, Pope Francis calls for peace and the values of life. As a spiritual leader, the Pope integrates technology in carrying out his ministry duties. This inspires leaders that spiritual leadership, servant leadership are synergistic with leadership in the digital era.

Review

This proposed study presents a highly relevant and timely exploration into the digital communication strategies of Pope Francis, viewed through the lens of servant leadership and analyzed using Teun A. Van Dijk's Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). The topic is particularly pertinent in an era where global leaders increasingly leverage digital platforms like X (formerly Twitter) to connect with diverse audiences. The chosen methodology of CDA is well-suited for dissecting the nuanced layers of meaning, power dynamics, and rhetorical strategies embedded within the Pope's tweets. It is important to note, however, that the abstract specifies the data collection period as January to April 2025. This indicates that the current submission describes a planned or ongoing study, rather than a completed one, and the findings presented are therefore anticipatory, based on the researchers' theoretical framework and expectations. The abstract effectively outlines a robust conceptual framework for the intended analysis. The detailed enumeration of servant leadership characteristics (listening, teaching, empathy, etc.) and the identified macrostructure topics (gratitude, brotherhood, peace, etc.) demonstrate a clear understanding of both servant leadership theory and the anticipated themes of Pope Francis' messaging. This foresight strengthens the proposal, indicating a well-thought-out approach to categorizing and interpreting the discursive elements. The intention to analyze superstructure through emphasis placement and microstructure via explicit semantics offers a promising multi-layered analytical framework. Furthermore, the study's aspiration to highlight the synergy between spiritual leadership, servant leadership, and digital era leadership provides a valuable contribution to contemporary leadership discourse, inspiring leaders to integrate technology effectively in their ministry. While the conceptualization is strong, the full impact of this research will, of course, depend on the rigorous execution of the methodology once the data from January to April 2025 is available. Future elaboration in the complete paper could benefit from discussing the potential limitations of analyzing only the outgoing tweets, without fully accounting for audience interaction or engagement metrics, if that data becomes available and is relevant to the "communication" aspect. Overall, this proposal lays a compelling groundwork for a significant study. The interdisciplinary approach combining theology, leadership, and digital communication holds immense potential for generating novel insights into modern spiritual leadership. We look forward to reviewing the comprehensive findings and a full discussion of the analysis once the specified data collection and interpretive work have been completed.
