Abstract

Purpose of the study: This study aims to identify and analyze effective learning strategies in overcoming concentration barriers in children with disabilities at SLB Bhakti Luhur Madiun. Methodology: This study used a descriptive qualitative approach with a case study method. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation with students with disabilities, teachers, and caregivers. Data analysis used the Miles and Huberman interactive model. Main Findings: The results showed that the implementation of various strategies such as direct learning, individualized teaching, behavior modification strategies, lecture method, and the use of learning media (pictures) were able to improve students' focus, motivation, and engagement. Regular evaluation by teachers is also proven to support learning effectiveness. Supporting factors include teacher commitment, small number of students, and comfortable classroom atmosphere. Meanwhile, the main obstacle is students' emotional instability. Novelty/Originality of this study: Previous research has discussed learning for children with special needs in general, but has not specifically examined effective learning strategies to overcome concentration barriers in students with intellectual disabilities in classroom practice. This gap highlights the need for more focused studies on applicable and contextual learning strategies. Therefore, this study aims to identify and analyze effective learning strategies in overcoming concentration barriers in children with intellectual disabilities at SLB Bhakti Luhur Madiun.

Review

This study, titled "Effective Learning Strategies to Overcome Concentration Barriers in Tunagrahita Children at SLB Bhakti Luhur Madiun," addresses a highly relevant and critical area within special education. The researchers employed a descriptive qualitative approach with a case study methodology, which is well-suited for an in-depth exploration of practices within a specific institutional context. This choice allows for rich, nuanced data collection through observation, interviews, and documentation, providing valuable insights into the lived experiences of students, teachers, and caregivers. The focus on Tunagrahita children (intellectual disabilities) and their concentration barriers fills a practical need for educators seeking tailored strategies to improve learning outcomes in this specific population. The main findings illuminate a range of practical strategies identified as effective, including direct learning, individualized teaching, behavior modification, the lecture method, and the strategic use of visual media like pictures. These methods reportedly led to improved student focus, motivation, and engagement, highlighting their potential utility in similar settings. The emphasis on regular teacher evaluation and the identification of supporting factors such as teacher commitment, small class sizes, and a comfortable classroom atmosphere further enrich the understanding of the conditions conducive to success. While the identified strategies might not be entirely novel in special education literature, their specific application and observed efficacy in overcoming concentration barriers for children with intellectual disabilities within this particular context represent a valuable contribution. The candid acknowledgment of emotional instability as a primary obstacle also adds to the study's practical realism. While the study offers significant practical insights, its case study nature inherently limits the generalizability of the findings. Future research could benefit from larger-scale comparative studies across multiple institutions or a mixed-methods approach to quantify the impact of these strategies more broadly. Nevertheless, this paper makes a commendable contribution by providing a detailed, contextualized account of effective learning strategies. It offers practical guidance and valuable lessons for educators and policymakers working with children with intellectual disabilities, fostering a deeper understanding of the complexities and successes in addressing concentration challenges in special education settings.
