Tinjauan literatur ini mengevaluasi efektivitas bahasa empatik dalam relasi dokter-pasien geriatri. Pahami peran empati meningkatkan kepercayaan, kepatuhan pengobatan, dan kualitas hidup pasien.
Empathetic communication plays a key role in building a strong therapeutic relationship between doctors and elderly patients. This study is a literature review that aims to evaluate the effectiveness of empathic language on the quality of therapeutic relationships in the context of geriatric services. Articles were selected through an identification and screening process using specific keywords in databases such as Sinta, Neliti, Garuda, and Google Scholar, with inclusion criteria that include studies in the last 10 years, in Indonesian or English, full - text, and are primary research. The results show that empathic communication through cognitive and affective empathy plays a significant role in increasing patient trust, adherence to treatment, and clinical and psychosocial outcomes, such as decreased anxiety and increased quality of life. Communication strategies include the use of simple language, personal attention, and consistent emotional engagement. Implementation barriers include high workload and a lack of training. Empathy training in medical curriculum, the development of patient-centered communication guidelines, and the holistic implementation of the Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) are essential.
The submitted literature review addresses a highly pertinent and critical area within healthcare: the effectiveness of empathic language in fostering quality therapeutic relationships between doctors and geriatric patients. This topic is particularly significant given the increasing elderly population and the unique communication challenges often present in this demographic. The study clearly states its objective to evaluate this effectiveness through a systematic review of existing literature. The methodology outlines a search across relevant databases including Sinta, Neliti, Garuda, and Google Scholar, employing specific inclusion criteria such as publication within the last decade, availability in Indonesian or English, full-text access, and classification as primary research. This methodological rigor suggests a focused attempt to gather relevant and recent evidence. The findings presented underscore the substantial impact of empathic communication, encompassing both cognitive and affective dimensions, on various aspects of geriatric patient care. Specifically, the review highlights its role in enhancing patient trust, improving adherence to treatment regimens, and positively influencing both clinical and psychosocial outcomes, such as a reduction in anxiety and an elevated quality of life. The abstract also identifies key communication strategies, including the use of simple language, personalized attention, and consistent emotional engagement, which offer practical guidance for clinicians. Importantly, the review acknowledges existing barriers to effective implementation, such as heavy workload and insufficient training, providing a balanced perspective on the current landscape. This literature review provides a valuable synthesis of current knowledge, making a strong case for prioritizing empathic language in geriatric care. Its strength lies in consolidating evidence from a range of sources, particularly those relevant to an Indonesian context through the inclusion of local databases. While the abstract sufficiently outlines the scope, a more explicit mention of the number of studies ultimately included would further enhance its methodological transparency. The proposed solutions—integrating empathy training into medical curricula, developing patient-centered communication guidelines, and implementing Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) holistically—are well-founded and offer actionable recommendations for improving patient-doctor interactions and overall care quality for older adults. This review serves as a timely reminder of the profound impact of human connection in clinical practice.
