Abstract

COVID-19 has created unprecedented challenges in society with regard to the safety of healthcare personnel and the jeopardizing of the public health system. This can happen if healthcare facilities do not increase their vigilance in protecting healthcare workers. This study is a quantitative, observational and analytical study of 200 people in Central Java. The data analysis used was path analysis, and it was found that the quality of speech therapy services increased (b = 2.58 units; 95% CI = 1.90 to 3.27; p < 0.001), and the level of satisfaction of speech therapy patients increased (b = 1.28 units; 95% CI = 0.61 to 1.95; p < 0.001). In contrast, therapeutic motivation decreased (b = 0.63; 95% CI = 1.21 to -0.05; p=0.033). The conclusion of this study is an increase in service quality, therapeutic motivation and patient satisfaction in speech therapy indirectly influenced by quality and motivation theory.

Review

This study tackles a highly relevant and timely topic, investigating the multifaceted impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on speech therapy services in Central Java. The authors employed a quantitative, observational, and analytical approach with a substantial sample of 200 participants, utilizing path analysis to explore the relationships between service quality, patient motivation, and satisfaction. The abstract presents intriguing findings: an observed increase in both the quality of speech therapy services and patient satisfaction, alongside a reported decrease in therapeutic motivation. These results, if consistently presented, offer valuable insights into how healthcare delivery and patient engagement were affected during an unprecedented global health crisis. While the study's premise is commendable, the abstract presents several critical ambiguities and inconsistencies that impede a clear understanding of its contributions. Firstly, the operationalization of key variables such as "quality of speech therapy services," "therapeutic motivation" (and its relation to "motivasi kehadiran" from the title), and "patient satisfaction" is not detailed, leaving the measurement methods unclear. More significantly, there is a direct contradiction in the abstract's summary of results: it states "therapeutic motivation decreased" (b = 0.63; 95% CI = 1.21 to -0.05; p=0.033) in the main results section, yet concludes with "an increase in... therapeutic motivation." This fundamental inconsistency casts serious doubt on the reliability and interpretability of the study's conclusions regarding a crucial aspect of patient engagement. Furthermore, while path analysis was used, the specific pathways or the model tested are not elaborated, making it difficult to comprehend the "indirect influence" mentioned. Given these issues, particularly the contradictory statement about therapeutic motivation, the study's current abstract falls short of providing a coherent and trustworthy account of its findings. The conclusion's vague reference to being "indirectly influenced by quality and motivation theory" lacks specificity, making it difficult to ascertain the theoretical framework informing the research or how the observed outcomes align with established theories. For this research to be impactful, the authors must meticulously clarify the methodology, reconcile the contradictory results, elaborate on the theoretical underpinnings, and provide a robust discussion of the practical implications, especially concerning the actual finding of *decreased* therapeutic motivation. Without these crucial clarifications, the abstract, despite its pertinent topic, leaves more questions than answers regarding the true impact of the pandemic.
