This study investigates the economic impact of illegal gold mining (Penambangan Emas Tanpa Izin – PETI) on the community of Teluk Pandak Village, Tanah Sepenggal District, Bungo Regency. The primary objective was to compare the economic conditions of the local population before and after the onset of these unregulated mining activities. Employing a qualitative research methodology, the study reveals that prior to PETI, villagers primarily worked as farmers, laborers, and traders with modest incomes. Crucially, the research identifies an "extraordinary increase" in the economic well-being of the community post-PETI, evidenced by improved access to education, enhanced transportation facilities, better health provisions, and more suitable housing. The topic of illegal gold mining is highly relevant, given its widespread prevalence and complex socio-economic implications in many developing regions. This research provides a valuable, albeit focused, insight by directly addressing the economic motivations and benefits experienced at the local community level. The clear objective and straightforward qualitative approach are commendable, offering empirical data that helps explain why communities might participate in such activities despite their legal and potential environmental drawbacks. By highlighting the tangible improvements in key quality-of-life indicators – education, health, transport, and housing – the study contributes to understanding the immediate drivers of local engagement in PETI, which is a critical piece of information for policymakers and stakeholders. While the study effectively demonstrates the positive economic outcomes for the Teluk Pandak community, a significant limitation apparent from the abstract is the lack of consideration for the potentially negative environmental, social, and health consequences often associated with illegal gold mining. A comprehensive understanding requires a balanced discussion of both benefits and costs, including issues like environmental degradation, mercury contamination, social conflicts, and the sustainability of these economic gains given the transient nature of mining and its illegality. Future iterations or the full paper would benefit immensely from incorporating these broader dimensions, providing a more holistic and nuanced perspective on the true impact of PETI. Nonetheless, this study serves as an important initial step in quantifying the immediate economic benefits driving community involvement.
