Abstract

Review

This study addresses a highly pertinent issue in contemporary organizational contexts: the divergence between the idealized conception of expert work and its everyday reality. Titled "Asiantuntijatyötä vai toisarvoista puuhastelua? Ei-legitiimi työ ja sen yhteydet hyvinvointiin asiantuntijatyössä" (Expert work or secondary fiddling? Non-legitimate work and its connections to well-being in expert work), the research critically examines the prevalence and impact of "non-legitimate tasks"—duties not perceived by employees as belonging to their job description—within expert roles. By investigating the extent to which experts engage in such tasks and their associated factors, the paper delves into crucial questions concerning work design, management practices, and ultimately, employee well-being, making a valuable contribution to the understanding of evolving work dynamics. Utilizing a robust dataset from the 2015 AikaJärjestys survey, the study analyzed responses from 1,823 employed wage-earners. The methodology effectively quantifies the problem, revealing that a significant 12% of experts report experiencing at least a considerable amount of non-legitimate tasks in their roles. Furthermore, the findings establish clear correlates for these tasks, identifying inadequate staffing, poor work organization, and a lack of constructive dialogue with supervisors regarding goals and schedules as significant contributing factors. Most importantly, the research unequivocally links the presence of non-legitimate tasks to adverse psychological symptoms, highlighting a direct impact on the mental well-being of expert employees. The findings of this paper carry substantial implications for both organizational theory and practical management. By empirically demonstrating the widespread nature and detrimental effects of non-legitimate tasks, the study underscores an urgent need for organizations to critically reassess workload allocation, staffing levels, and supervisory communication practices in expert domains. The identified links to psychological well-being also emphasize the importance of addressing these issues not just for productivity, but for the health and sustainability of the workforce. Future research could potentially explore the specific *types* of tasks deemed non-legitimate and their varying impacts, or investigate intervention strategies aimed at mitigating their prevalence and negative consequences. Overall, this is a well-executed study providing clear, actionable insights into a critical challenge facing modern expert organizations.
