Abstract

This article examines the response of Indonesian netizens to the presence of YouTube media with a focus on the YouTube channel @Mager_Nonton, a channel that discusses the storyline of films, especially foreign films. Previous research only focused on analyzing YouTube content and the messages it wanted to convey. This research comes as an update that netizens place an important role in video content, such as interacting in the comments column and so on. This article attempts to answer the main question, namely how do netizens interpret the content from the YouTube channel @Mager_Nonton and what are the conversations between netizens? Meanwhile, the follow-up question is, how is the presence of YouTube media in Indonesia? To answer this question, the author used the netnography method on the YouTube channel @Mager_Nonton, then the author read subscribers, likes and comments from netizens regarding the content displayed, then analyzed it with relevant previous literature. The results of the research show that netizens respond to the YouTube channel @Mager_Nonton as a place to discuss, share the content of the film storylines they see in the comments column, and also as a place to add insight and new knowledge related to films among netizens who comment, such as sharing information regarding the cast movies in the real world.

Review

The article "YouTube and Online Sharing: Netizen Responses to the YouTube Channel @Mager_Nonton" presents an interesting examination of user engagement with a specific YouTube channel in Indonesia. The study focuses on @Mager_Nonton, a channel dedicated to summarizing foreign film storylines, and purports to offer a novel perspective by analyzing netizen responses and interactions in the comments section, rather than solely focusing on content analysis as previous research allegedly did. Using a netnography method, the authors aimed to understand how netizens interpret the channel's content, the nature of their conversations, and, more broadly, the presence of YouTube in Indonesia. The findings suggest that the channel serves as a vibrant platform for discussion, sharing film-related insights, and fostering a sense of community for adding knowledge among its audience. While the premise is sound, several aspects of the abstract indicate potential areas for refinement in the full paper. The methodological description of netnography, merely stating "reading subscribers, likes and comments," lacks the necessary detail regarding data collection, coding, analysis, and saturation, which are crucial for establishing the rigor and validity of qualitative research. The claim that previous research "only focused on analyzing YouTube content" may be an oversimplification, as many studies have explored user interaction and reception. Furthermore, the integration of a clear theoretical framework is not evident; while the study seeks to understand interpretation and conversation, it does not explicitly state which communication or audience reception theories guide this analysis, which would significantly deepen the insights. The follow-up question, "how is the presence of YouTube media in Indonesia?", appears overly broad for a single channel netnography, and the abstract does not clearly demonstrate how the specific findings about @Mager_Nonton adequately address this expansive query. Despite these points, the study addresses a relevant and timely topic concerning digital media consumption and online communities, particularly within the Indonesian context. The focus on specific audience responses offers valuable granular insights into how media platforms are utilized beyond passive viewing. To strengthen the paper, I recommend the authors provide a more robust and detailed account of their netnographic methodology, including explicit steps for data selection, analytical procedures, and how reliability and validity were ensured. Integrating an established theoretical framework would help ground the interpretation of netizen responses in broader academic discourse. Moreover, clarifying the scope of the second research question, or explicitly linking how the specific findings on @Mager_Nonton contribute to a *nuanced understanding* of YouTube's presence in Indonesia rather than a comprehensive overview, would enhance the paper's focus and impact. These improvements would significantly elevate the scholarly contribution of this potentially insightful research.
