Abstract

Review

This research addresses a pertinent public health issue: the persistent challenge of anemia among adolescent girls and pregnant women, compounded by poor compliance with conventional iron supplementation due to side effects. The study proposes an innovative and potentially more palatable alternative through the development of an anti-anemia herbal capsule derived from local West Sumatran strawberries (Fragaria × ananassa). This initiative is commendable for exploring natural, locally sourced remedies to enhance public health, aligning with the growing demand for natural health products that offer improved comfort and acceptance among consumers. The methodology employed follows a research and development approach, transforming strawberries into a freeze-dried powder and subsequently analyzing its iron content via Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry, which revealed a substantial 372.94 mg/kg. The resulting product, named Hemavita, is formulated to provide approximately 20% of daily iron needs. A preliminary seven-day pretest-posttest intervention on five respondents yielded encouraging results, demonstrating an average increase in hemoglobin levels from 12.36 ± 1.64 g/dL to 13.74 ± 2.05 g/dL, with a mean increase of 1.38 ± 0.68 g/dL. These initial findings strongly suggest the potential of this strawberry-based capsule as a viable herbal supplement for improving hemoglobin status. While the preliminary results are promising and highlight a novel application for a local agricultural product, the study's limitations necessitate caution in interpreting its broader implications. The very small sample size of five respondents and the short intervention period of seven days significantly constrain the generalizability and statistical power of the findings. Future research must encompass larger, randomized controlled trials with a longer duration to robustly confirm efficacy, evaluate safety profiles, and compare its effectiveness against established iron supplements. Furthermore, investigating the bioavailability of iron from strawberry capsules and elucidating other potential mechanisms by which strawberries may contribute to anti-anemic effects (e.g., presence of vitamin C enhancing iron absorption, or other micronutrients) would greatly strengthen the scientific basis of this promising herbal innovation.
