Abstract

Review

The article, "Tra collezionismo e ricerca. Appunti su un’indagine in corso," addresses a crucial, yet often overlooked, challenge in contemporary philological scholarship. While acknowledging the transformative power of digital resources in expanding research avenues, the authors astutely identify the persistent "grey area" of private collections as a significant untapped reservoir of material. The contribution centers on presenting concrete examples of previously unexamined Carduccian autographs held within Roberto Fumagalli's collection, positioning this work as preliminary notes within a broader, ongoing investigation into the interface between private ownership and academic discovery. The primary strength of this paper lies in its practical demonstration of how private collections can enrich philological research. By providing access to partly unpublished Carduccian autographs, the study promises to offer fresh insights into a canonical author, potentially revising existing scholarship or unearthing new facets of his work and life. The explicit call for "close collaboration between scholars, collectors, and antiquarian booksellers" is particularly compelling and timely. This recommendation not only highlights a viable pathway to overcome access barriers but also underscores a vital methodological shift necessary to fully leverage the scattered textual heritage residing outside public institutions. The focus on *concrete examples* effectively grounds this appeal in practical necessity rather than theoretical abstraction. As "notes on an ongoing investigation," this piece serves as an important clarion call and a compelling proof-of-concept for greater engagement with private collections. While the abstract suggests an initial exploration, a full methodological framework for fostering the proposed collaboration—addressing practicalities such as digitization, cataloguing standards for private holdings, ethical considerations, and funding models—would be a natural and valuable next step for the larger investigation. Nevertheless, this contribution is highly relevant, shedding light on invaluable primary sources and advocating for a collaborative model essential for the future of philological and literary studies. It effectively demonstrates the significant intellectual returns possible when the worlds of private collecting and academic rigor converge.
