This article proposes an intriguing qualitative examination of the transformation of the press system in Indonesia, tracing its evolution from the colonial period into the modern era. The study's core objective is to understand the media's role as an agent of social change during this pivotal transition. By employing a qualitative approach, specifically historical analysis and literature review, the research aims to uncover how the press shifted from a colonial-controlled entity to a more independent, democratic force, instrumental in shaping Indonesian social and political identity. This historical perspective on media's functional role beyond mere information dissemination, emphasizing its active participation in societal transformation, is a valuable area of inquiry. The premise of the article—that media functioned as a tool for struggle and an agent of change during Indonesia's transition—holds significant promise. The abstract effectively highlights the intended scope, detailing a shift from colonial control to a more democratic and critical press. This evolution, as described, is crucial for understanding the nation-building process and the development of public discourse. The exploration of how media contributed to the formation of a more inclusive Indonesian social and political identity further underscores the potential impact of this research, offering insights into the complex interplay between media, power structures, and societal transformation. While the abstract provides a compelling overview, a more detailed articulation of the theoretical framework that guides the analysis would strengthen the paper. For instance, clarifying which specific theories of media and social change (e.g., agenda-setting, framing, public sphere theory, or post-colonial media theory) underpin the qualitative approach would enhance its scholarly rigor. Additionally, while historical analysis and literature review are mentioned, providing examples of the types of primary or secondary sources utilized (e.g., specific colonial newspapers, nationalist publications, government archives) and how their content is analyzed for themes of struggle and identity formation would offer a clearer picture of the methodology's practical application. This would help further solidify the study's contribution to the existing body of knowledge on media, colonialism, and nation-building.
