Abstract

Review

This study addresses a critical public health issue concerning anemia among adolescent girls, highlighting the importance of early prevention through Iron Supplement Tablet (TTD) consumption. The authors appropriately identify suboptimal adherence to TTD as a significant challenge and propose that family support plays a central role in influencing health behaviors. The primary objective of this research was to investigate the relationship between family support and adherence to TTD consumption among adolescent girls in Depok City. This focus is highly relevant given the established impact of family dynamics on health outcomes and provides valuable insight into a potentially modifiable factor for improving nutritional status in this vulnerable population. Methodologically, the study employed a cross-sectional design, suitable for exploring associations between variables at a specific point in time. A sample of 111 adolescent girls aged 13-18 years from Depok City was recruited using purposive sampling, based on criteria such as prior puskesmas visits at school and willingness to participate. Exclusion criteria for cognitive impairment or not living with family were sensible to ensure data quality and relevance to the study's focus on family support. While the cross-sectional design effectively identifies correlations, it inherently limits the ability to infer causality. Furthermore, the use of purposive sampling, while practical, means the findings may not be fully generalizable to the entire adolescent girl population in Depok or beyond. The instruments used for family support and TTD adherence are mentioned, though further detail on their validity and reliability would strengthen the methodological reporting. The findings reveal a statistically significant relationship between family support and adherence to TTD consumption (p=0.019; α=0.05), with an odds ratio of 2.478. This indicates that adolescent girls with stronger family support are more than twice as likely to adhere to TTD consumption, robustly supporting the study's central hypothesis. The conclusion emphasizes the practical implication that family involvement and continuous education are crucial strategies for enhancing TTD adherence. This research provides a strong empirical basis for designing targeted interventions that empower families to support their adolescent daughters' health behaviors. Future research could build on these findings by exploring the specific mechanisms through which family support influences adherence, perhaps through qualitative studies, or by evaluating the effectiveness of family-centered educational interventions in a longitudinal design.
