The impact of artificial intelligence on medical tourism: a new theoretical framework for enhancing healthcare accessibility and efficiency. Explore a novel framework on AI's impact on medical tourism, enhancing healthcare accessibility, efficiency, & patient satisfaction. Reduces costs & improves service for international patients.
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to propose a novel theoretical framework that explores the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into the medical tourism sector, with the aim of enhancing healthcare accessibility, efficiency, and patient satisfaction. The framework is designed to address the challenges faced by medical tourism destinations, such as high treatment costs, accessibility issues, and operational inefficiencies. Design/methodology/approach – This study employs a conceptual methodology, combining a comprehensive review of current AI applications in healthcare and the development of a new framework tailored to medical tourism. The framework integrates AI-driven predictive analytics, virtual health assistants, and personalized treatment algorithms. Furthermore, a mathematical model is proposed to substantiate the framework, demonstrating its impact on key performance indicators (KPIs) in medical tourism. Findings – The paper finds that AI can significantly improve operational efficiency, reduce treatment costs, enhance patient satisfaction, and increase the competitiveness of medical tourism destinations. The proposed framework shows how AI can address critical challenges such as language barriers, healthcare quality discrepancies, and patient navigation difficulties. Practical implications – The findings suggest that healthcare providers and policymakers in medical tourism destinations can leverage AI technologies to improve service delivery, attract more international patients, and foster economic growth in the sector. The study provides actionable recommendations for the adoption of AI in medical tourism, which could lead to a more efficient, affordable, and patient-friendly healthcare experience. Originality/value – This paper offers a novel theoretical framework that integrates AI into the medical tourism industry, which has not been sufficiently explored in existing literature. The proposed model contributes to a better understanding of how AI can enhance the quality, accessibility, and efficiency of healthcare services for international patients.
This paper presents a timely and highly relevant theoretical framework that systematically integrates Artificial Intelligence (AI) into the burgeoning medical tourism sector. The core purpose is to address critical challenges such as high treatment costs, accessibility issues, and operational inefficiencies, ultimately aiming to enhance healthcare accessibility, efficiency, and patient satisfaction for international patients. Through a conceptual methodology that combines a comprehensive literature review with the development of a novel framework, the authors propose a robust model incorporating AI-driven predictive analytics, virtual health assistants, and personalized treatment algorithms. The inclusion of a mathematical model to substantiate the framework's impact on key performance indicators further strengthens its theoretical grounding. The study's primary strength lies in its originality and proactive approach to an under-explored interdisciplinary domain. By developing a novel theoretical framework, the paper effectively demonstrates how AI can significantly improve operational efficiency, reduce treatment costs, and enhance the overall competitiveness of medical tourism destinations. The findings adeptly illustrate AI's potential to mitigate specific challenges such as language barriers, healthcare quality discrepancies, and complex patient navigation, which are inherent to the medical tourism experience. This conceptual foresight provides a foundational blueprint for understanding the transformative potential of AI in an industry ripe for technological disruption. From a practical perspective, this research offers substantial implications for both healthcare providers and policymakers operating within medical tourism. The actionable recommendations provided suggest clear pathways for leveraging AI technologies to refine service delivery, attract a broader international patient base, and stimulate economic growth within the sector. The paper’s contribution extends beyond mere theoretical discourse, promising a future where healthcare services for international patients are more efficient, affordable, and profoundly patient-friendly. It sets a strong agenda for future empirical research to validate the proposed framework and its predicted impact.
