Abstract

This research was motivated by the low critical thinking skills of class VIII students at SMP Negeri 3 Bangkinang. One solution to overcome this problem is to apply snowball throwing learning. This research aims to determine whether snowball throwing learning through audio-visual learning media influences students' critical thinking abilities or not. This research is a quasi-experimental study using a randomized control group pretest-posttest design. The research subjects consisted of class VIIIA, totaling 32 students, and VIIIC, totaling 30 students. The sampling technique used was simple random sampling. The research instruments used were observation sheets and test questions on students' critical thinking abilities. The results of the research show that the Snowball Throwing model through Audio-Visual learning media has an effect on students' mathematical critical thinking abilities. With the increase in the average student score after the learning model was implemented in the experimental class from the average score before the learning model was implemented, H also became a reference that the application of the Snowball Throwing type cooperative learning model through audio-visual learning media can influence and improve thinking abilities. critical of class VIII students at SMPN 3 Bangkinang.

Review

This study addresses the pertinent issue of low critical thinking skills among eighth-grade students in algebra, proposing the implementation of a Snowball Throwing cooperative learning model enhanced with audio-visual media as a potential solution. The research employs a quasi-experimental design with a randomized control group pretest-posttest methodology, an appropriate approach for educational interventions in real-world settings. The abstract clearly articulates the study's aim to assess the influence of this specific learning model on students' critical thinking abilities, setting a focused objective for the investigation. A notable strength of this research lies in its practical relevance, tackling a core educational challenge by integrating an interactive cooperative learning strategy with modern audio-visual tools. The choice of the Snowball Throwing model is well-defined, and its combination with audio-visual aids suggests a multi-modal approach designed to engage students more effectively. The abstract succinctly presents the key finding: the Snowball Throwing model through audio-visual learning media positively affects students' mathematical critical thinking abilities, evidenced by an increase in average scores in the experimental class. This direct and positive result indicates a successful intervention and provides valuable insights for educators seeking to improve critical thinking in similar contexts. While the abstract provides a compelling overview, a full paper would benefit from greater methodological detail and statistical rigor. For instance, explicitly stating the statistical significance (e.g., p-value) or effect size associated with the "increase in the average student score" would significantly strengthen the reported findings and bolster the confidence in the conclusion that the model "has an effect." Furthermore, while "simple random sampling" is mentioned for subjects, clarification on how the *classes* (VIIIA and VIIIC) were assigned to experimental and control groups within this quasi-experimental framework would enhance methodological transparency. Lastly, while the abstract establishes an effect, a deeper exploration of the specific mechanisms through which the Snowball Throwing model with audio-visuals cultivates critical thinking would add valuable theoretical depth to the practical results.
