Spiritual phenomena are an integral part of Indonesian society. However, some think these phenomena are part of tariqa practice. This study aims to reveal the criteria and characteristics of the tariqa, especially the mu'tabaroh tariqa (notable Sufi order), through the perspective of one of the tariqa association organisations in Indonesia, namely Jam'iyyah Ahlith Thoriqoh al-Mu'tabaroh an-Nahdliyyah (JATMAN). This study is qualitative research in which the data were collected from library research. This study found that the tariqa is a path, school or order of Sufism. The tariqa is a path to get closer to Allah SWT under the guidance of a murshid (spiritual teacher). The tariqa can be categorised as mu'tabaroh if it has a connected chain (sanad) to the Prophet Muhammad and its teachings do not conflict with Islamic law. In addition, as an organisation, JATMAN, through the Ifta' Council, is competent to determine whether a tariqa can be considered mu'tabaroh or not.
This study, "Tarekat Mu'tabaroh dalam Perspektif Jam'iyyah Ahlith Thoriqoh Al-Mu’tabaroh An-Nahdliyyah Indonesia," offers a timely and relevant exploration into the criteria for distinguishing 'mu'tabaroh' (notable) Sufi orders, a critical aspect of Indonesia's rich spiritual landscape. Addressing the prevalent integration of spiritual phenomena within Indonesian society, the research meticulously aims to delineate the characteristics of legitimate tariqa specifically through the authoritative lens of Jam'iyyah Ahlith Thoriqoh al-Mu'tabaroh an-Nahdliyyah (JATMAN). Utilizing a qualitative research methodology grounded in library research, the paper establishes a foundational understanding of how a prominent Sufi order association defines and authenticates these spiritual paths. The findings provide clear definitions and crucial criteria for what constitutes a *mu'tabaroh* tariqa. It elucidates the tariqa as a spiritual path or school of Sufism intended to draw adherents closer to Allah SWT under the guidance of a spiritual teacher (*murshid*). Fundamentally, for a tariqa to be considered *mu'tabaroh*, it must possess an unbroken chain of transmission (*sanad*) tracing back to the Prophet Muhammad, and its teachings must strictly adhere to Islamic law. Significantly, the research highlights JATMAN's institutional role, particularly through its Ifta' Council, as the competent body vested with the authority to determine and validate the *mu'tabaroh* status of various tariqa, thereby acting as a crucial gatekeeper of Sufi authenticity in Indonesia. The paper excels in its clear articulation of what defines a *tarekat mu'tabaroh* from an influential organizational perspective, offering valuable insights into the self-regulatory mechanisms within mainstream Indonesian Sufism. This focused approach provides an essential conceptual framework for understanding the legitimacy and distinctiveness of these Sufi orders. While the qualitative, library-based approach effectively lays this groundwork, future research could enrich this understanding by exploring the practical application of these criteria by JATMAN's Ifta' Council, perhaps through case studies or interviews. Additionally, comparative analyses with other religious authorities or a broader examination of the social reception of these classifications could offer a more nuanced and comprehensive view of tariqa dynamics in Indonesia.
