Review

This paper, "Sejarah Pendudukan Jepang Di Kupang Tahun 1942-1945," offers a focused historical examination of the Japanese occupation in Kupang during World War II. It comprehensively outlines the circumstances surrounding Japan's arrival in the region, the strategic motivations behind their presence, and the multifaceted consequences experienced by the local population between 1942 and 1945. This localized study contributes valuable insights into a crucial period of Indonesian history, specifically addressing a geographic area that can sometimes be underrepresented in broader historical narratives. The research effectively establishes the initial entry points of Japanese forces, specifying both the Penfui air route and the Batulase sea route on February 19, 1942. It clearly articulates the strategic rationale for Japan's interest in Kupang, citing its importance as a trade transit hub and its proximity to Australia as a potential springboard for further military objectives. A significant strength lies in its balanced assessment of the occupation's impacts, categorizing them into both negative and positive outcomes. The negative repercussions, such as forced labor (Romusha), economic hardship, resource exploitation, and psychological trauma for women, are starkly highlighted. Conversely, the study identifies long-term positive legacies, including infrastructural development, the establishment of schools, and critically, the role of Japanese-formed organizations in fostering the nascent Indonesian independence movement in Kupang. While providing a solid overview, the abstract suggests potential avenues for deeper exploration within the full paper. For instance, a more detailed analysis of the methodologies used to ascertain the "positive" impacts, particularly the long-term infrastructure and the precise mechanisms through which Japanese organizations nurtured independence movements, would strengthen the arguments. Further elaboration on the lived experiences of the Romusha or the specific forms of resource exploitation could add richer qualitative depth. Despite these considerations, the paper makes an important contribution by shedding light on a specific regional history of the Japanese occupation, moving beyond generalized accounts and offering a granular view of its complexities and enduring legacies in Kupang.
